1960 356B T5 Restoration plus LHD to RHD conversion

#1 Post by StephenJohns »

I imported this car from California to Australia just over 2 years ago now.
It was stripped back mostly and then sat dormant for a while until finally built a jig to put it up on for the long build process.

Stripping it down found several nasty surprises.
1/ It has had a big hit in the left hand side at some stage in its life which has transferred allot o force into the roof area.
2/ Like most repairs in its day, whoever did this one was either blind, drunk, or both. The repairs are amazingly amateur and poorly done. Panels cut off one car and welded on very badly indeed.
3/ Like most cars that look ok to start with, it is not. All it needs is almost every metal section replaced.

The upside is that all panels that are stamped (even the LH door which would have been hit) have the correct stamps to match the chassis. The engine and frame numbers are matching so its a complete but poor, original car.

The main are to fix first is the inner LH longitudinal and door hinge post and brackets as they are far from being in the position they should be and very damaged from whatever accident this car had.

I will be doing a RHD conversion throughout the process of restoring this car and will keep up the pictures as I go.

I am a qualified mechanic however not that experienced when it comes to panel work. I can weld (MIG) and am learning TIG on a machine just purchased so will be replacing all structural sheet-metal but getting the final bodywork done by a professional.

Here is a pic whilst removing the 9 layers of paint.

Hi Neil,

Send me a pic of your BT6. I love seeing the start photo before any work is done to the car.
I am planning to have this completed by my 40th birthday in 2 years time all going well.
I only get to do approx. 8 hours a week on it so its a bit slow but occasionally, when the wife takes the kids for a day out, I can get a whole day over a weekend.

Here is a picture of the car going up onto the jig I made.

Got stuck into removing the LH inner longitudinal which has had more hits than Elvis by the looks of it.

Hi Rafik,

You are spot on mate.

Trying to source parts right now for the RHD conversion.
Would be interested in knowing what you did with dash and where you had luck sourcing parts from.
Trying to find a roof also at the moment as the current one is in very bad condition.

Would love to see some pictures of your work in progress.
Do you have a post on the forum?

Removed the wiring guide/tunnel behind dash so as I can relocate to LH side.
As the tank shelf will be replaced anyway, it was easier to cut out with air saw and drill out spot welds on the bench.

Stephen, please keep posting. I too have brought a '60 BT5 in from the 'States with lots of love required. I will set up a thread on this site, I think. You are about a month ahead of me as at your last post.

Cheers, Andrew.

Ended up having to get a donor car for the LH hinge post, roof and front axle beam.

Drove 800km (one way) with driveshaft destroying itself 300km from destination in the R50 V10 Touareg.
Finally got the car onto trailer. Lots of rust but the bits I need are good.

Finally finished the RHD conversion on the dash.
It came up better than expected.
The TIG welder did such a nice job.

Started working on the donor cars front axle beam and LH inner trunk panel and LH door hinge post.
Should be able to stitch it all in nicely one I fix the rusted sections. I will use the original RH inner trunk panel and make up some new half moon sections around the top of the RH axle beam and inner trunk panel and spot weld them all together with my new spot welder that does an amazing job on the two 1.2mm sheet metal that I tested it on.

Made this front section in about 30 minutes from one piece of sheet metal.
Not yet finished but final shaping will be as close to original as it can be.

Nice metalwork mate. Where are you getting your RHD pedals from?

Hi Andrew,

Thanks.
No idea yet.
I have a contact in Australia that has plenty of 356 parts but he doesn't like parting with them.
Tried several places overseas but haven't found a solution as of yet.

I think from all research, I have found that its all of the linkages and brackets etc. that are required. The pedal box (correct me if I am wrong) is the same on the LHD to RHD.

Do you have a source?

Regards, Steve
