Just to clarify the above colors are the original colors and codes for this car from the Porsche factory.The grey covers the body whilst the blue is the inner windshield frame and dash.

Jon, did you and your painter spectral match the Azure blue from the original paint on the dash? Looks very nice and very original.

I'm interested as my '53 coupe has the same blue dash, but virtually all the paint from the dash and door tops was removed by a previous owner. Would be interested in getting some information on that dark blue.

James, the paint on the dash when the car came in is not the original blue,we did find traces of the darker blue underneath.We looked into the lighter blue and found a cross reference to an early VW bug.
We are 99% sure this id the blue ,but want to be 100%.We are still researching on the blue,as the internet hasn't been successful so far.I will get our painter to chime in on the this as he'll give you more detail.

Hey everyone , after hours of research and tracking down other Fashion grey aka Mode Grau and Azure Blue dash cars which all I could find is 1 other cabroliet and 2 coupes which I was able to talk to the restoring company. The other cabroliet was restored by Road Scholars and currently in concours shows . The main reasoning for choosing Azure blue is that in the color availability for blue in the same years for Fashion Grey are 2 blues to choose from. When doing research on the cars vin I was told that blue is the interior color but no paint code, so all the research for these fashion grey cars aka Mode grau have pointed to Azure Blue dash and trim . The other blue is way to light and I have never seen or heard of the dash being that color, and going outside that color year for blue isn't what happened so you can scratch any other blues. Road Scholars had the formula for Azure blue from Glasurit which what I'll also be using so if anything, that concours car will match the concours car we are doing. Anytime I have had a question about a color match on a porsche I've found that 99% of the time Glasurit is pretty true to the exact original color formula give or take the gloss factor from using single stage or BaseCoat/ClearCoat, in this case the pre A cars are Dulux Laquer which is about impossible to get our hands on. Interesting Ryan. Road Scholars I'm sure got the color right, as they had the color in front of them on the existing car and could make sure the Glasurit color matched the existing dash.

I do know that Steve Harrison matched his dark blue dash when he repainted it. Perhaps you could compare notes with him.

This 1953 azure blue coupe has a dark blue dash that is darker than the body color. I do not know if this is because the dash blue is darker than the normal azure blue. Or perhaps a lighter version of azure blue was used when the car was repainted (the dash was not repainted). Inconclusive.

Finally, there's also a Reutter color R502 which is "dark blue". It is pictured on the 1950 color brochure on page 71 of Jung's "Porsche 356 by Reutter" book. I don't think anyone has a formulation for it.

I did some research on that 502 dark blue and not a lot of information was found no Glasurit formula and Dulux Laquer formula, I wonder how rare of a color 502 was ? It is very possible when your car was repainted the formula wasn't 100% plus that is a Laquer dash if it still original so that is going to be off from single stage or base/clear and I also know that pre-a dashes are originally semi gloss or close to it for anti glare reasons, so that also could throw off the color a bit. New color technology and many many years ago makes it tough to know what original truly was. I ordered a authenticity book for pre-a so I hope when I receive it I'll find out more about 502 and it's original applications. Should of ordered that book along time ago but had no idea there was such a thing . Have a guy I know from Switzerland that referred me to It just recently so when I know more I'll let you know.
