Hi Jody, try this....hard to see that matte black Constas exhaust lurking under the rear bumper. Sounds great with the subwoofer on my computer

Dear Steve,
Absolutely beautiful.
Much nicer indeed than when it left the factory.
I hope not too nice to be driven like it deserves to be - or rather as it was intended to be.
Please, dare driving it on back roads with gravel and potholes.
Then I will enthusiastically give 2 rounds of applauses. One for the restoration team and one for the brave owner.

Hello Pascal, thanks for the kind comments. The car is fully numbers matching, but the original engine is on the shelf in my garage. I think my driving intentions are shown by the selection of the big bore (90mm) hot rod engine that I have built for the car and the fact that a Colgan bra (I know, they're ugg-ully) is on the way...

The recent sales figures at recent auctions, however, do give one pause and I can tell you that despite a healthy bump in coverage I will not be parking it in the parking lot at Home Depot or Costco as I used to do before the re-do.

Hi Matt. Awesome restoration on the 58 Speedster!! Thx for the contribution!! This is pretty interesting to me for a kinda odd reason. I was wondering if the history is intact on this particular car? Reason being, I just pulled a 57 Speedster out of a container where it was hidden away since 1974!! And it just happens to have been a San Fran car as well. What is interesting is my car has a roll bar in it too, with the tag, built by W.M. Bachman San Fransisco! I have spoken with the daughter of WM Bachman and she told me her brother had a convertible Porsche in the late 50s that was his pride and joy, and that he probably bought it second hand. Is there a chance that this 1958 car might have belonged to Paul Bachman in the lates 50s or early sixties?? Sharon Bachman thought she remembered the car having a red interior, but also thought it may have been a silver car, although she wasn't sure. Ultimately my goal is to find out who the original owner of my car was/is, because mine was raced from 1957-1964, and I want to identify what car it was on the track, reunite it with it's racing heritage as an E Production race car. I bought from 2nd owner who couldn't remember who he bought it from. I'm thinking the early owners of these two cars knew each other. The Bachman welding shop was quite small and what are the chances 2 Speedsters would end up having fabrication done there. My 57 was turned into a more dedicated race car, bumpers removed, bumper holes filled, side molding removed and holes filled. It appears the 58 was basically stock with a roll bar, as of the time the poster was made. Is there any chance you could put me in touch with the owner of this car so I could find out what is known about the car? That would be a great help.. Hope we can do some sleuthing.. THANKS Matt! Since your beautiful Speedster was the subject of the Cleworth poster, you need to bring that car back up here to the Palace of Fine Arts and take some great photos of it.
Let me know when you plan to come and we'll get a group of East Bay Greasers together to welcome you and the San Francisco Speedster.

Marc, those are two different cars. Mine is a '58, 84757. I bought the car from Bill Gaszynski of Redwood City, CA. He put me in touch with the previous owner, Tom Peirona of Bellmont, CA. He was the owner of the car when the picture was taken for the Cleworth poster. I talked to him a few times over the years and learned that he died in 2005. The car had just been repainted and upholstered in 1976 or so when the photo was taken in Golden Gate Park. I took the picture above at EASY where a poster of the 1992 Speedsterfest cars was on the ceiling. Tom was cited for speeding (85mph) on the way to the event (article in the Registry).

The picture below was taken in San Diego during the West Coast Holiday in as-purchased condition. You can just see the full width rollbar behind my wife. Holes had been cut in the rear seat bottoms so the rollbar could be welded to the torsion bar tube. The reinforcing struts for the rollbar (bolted to the rear panel behind the seats) prevented the top from retracting completely and the top bows had been bent to retract further, making it look like a low bow top. I removed the rollbar shortly after I bought the car and some years later, had the residual stubs ground away and the seat bottoms repaired with properly contoured sheetmetal before it was restored. Old friend, the late Richard Miller in San Diego straightened and painted the top bows before I had a cover installed by Autos International while Roy was still there in the early 2000s.

Final picture was the rollbar stubs before being ground away and the seat bottoms repaired. Cool that you found your Speedster!!
