Twin found

#1 Post by David H Grant »

My third 356 coupe was 5 years old when I bought it from a friend as insurance salvage. It was stolen from the dealer's lot in SE Michigan, and recovered with much missing. In days, I had switched the needed components from my 1955 daily driver. Fast forward 30 years, and I was asked by our PCA Region President to estimate repair costs for a rusty 356B coupe. He was shocked, but said I should feel free to buy it, so I did. Its serial number is one less than the coupe I bought in the 60s, which I still own. This car sat in the back of my garage for decades. When we were locked down a few years ago, by draconian orders from Ottawa and DC, I decided this was time to take it apart, and restore it. I have been documenting the process for almost 4 years.

My wife calls these 2 coupes our 'twins'. So far the replacement steel panels have cost several times as much as the complete car did. The cost of installing them has been more than the cost of buying them. The thought of having these two twins, shiny and on display, motivates us to keep going. It was rusty, but no significant parts were missing.

Very cool David! Having two sequential serial numbers sitting restored side by side will be impressive. What colors were they originally?

I'd love to see more photos... I have a long way to go on mine and appreciate seeing how those more experienced than I tackle repairs.

Hi Chris, both these were red Normal Karmann coupes with black vinyl/cord interiors. The one I bought first has been drivable most of its life. The second one was very rusty, floor, trunk floor, door bottoms etc. My wife has been posting links to PDFs of each month's progress report. Most of the work has been taking it apart, and restoring components, such as latches, steering box, pedal cluster, door window frames, etc. My wife posts the links to our fb page. facebook.com/raceofficials ... If you send her an email at raceofficials at gmail dot com, she will send you links or PDFs.
