"Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance" - part of MontereyCar Week

#1 Post by John Z. Goriup »

I always approach this event with mixed emotions.......love to see the cars, hate the huge, undisciplined crowds. I fear that horrible things will happen to the cars that have just completed their 55 mile drive and are then displayed from about 12 noon until about 2:00 PM on Ocean Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

You can see all of the cars on the lawn on Sunday during the Concours, but this is free and is the only opportunity for "civilians" to see these cars.

I'm fully aware that this is a forum dedicated to the 356, but unfortunately Porsches on the lawn and in the Tour are extremely rare. It's been years that another 356 was entered in the Concours prior to last year's Road Scholars entered dark-red Gmünd Coupe which they had just finished restoring for Hans-Peter Porsche - it won its Class incidentally. Occasionally, during years that Porsche is the featured marques, you can see some race and rally cars on the lawn, but usually they are entered for display only and are not judged.

Therefore I felt that there may be a number of members who would like to see what was in this years' Tour and entered in PB, regardless of the badge on the hood and am taking the liberty of posting these abbreviated "trip reports". This years' featured marques were Shelby Cobras, "Maharaja" cars and various marques bodied and built by Saoutchik, Paris.

John, that Cab is entered into the Tour every year. GV-30 is not listed in any of the catalogs provided. I guess I will have to email Kandice Hawkinson and ask her who the participant is.

Don't for get Dirk Layer. He presented his survivor T2 Speedster last year.

This year another 356 Registry member; and good friend, Mike Malamut was invited to present his 1933 Fiat. He won third in his class.

In an off topic bit of news, sorry to hijack the thread, the Greystone Mansion Concours in Beverly Hills will feature Porsches as a class starting in 2013. This is not the PCA concours. It is a wonderful event which is becoming very popular for its low key approach.

You're correct.............here's the same Cabriolet in the 2010 Tour, leaving Ocean Ave.

I'd be more curious why it's in the Tour every year even though it's not entered in the PB Concours, rather than who owns it.

John:
I agree with you that Porsche is underrepresented at events associated with Pebble Beach Week. Or, at least, the bias is clearly more "red" when it comes to European sports and GT cars. This may reflect a regional bias - there is clearly more Ferrari money out that way.
Amelia had a very nice sports car balance, which included a gaggle of 250 GTOs, a mess of Cobras, and a phalanx of Porsche racing models. Bill Warner had some interesting arrangements on the greens this year.
GK Restorations brought a Speedster to The Concours of America (Plymouth, MI) as part of a display of 50s sports cars, but there were not any other Porsches at that event either, unless I was asleep on my feet (a definite possibility). Maybe for lack of a unifying theme - not sure.

Thanks John -
For your photos, which were most interesting and much appreciated by those of us that didn't attend the Concours or Montery activities.
