Cools Jules. Looks like it is 1190 H2. H2 is part of the ID number.
Vic, did you ever figure out what the Hn numbers were used for? Was it some indication about internals?

Re: A couple tranny's popped up on eBay
Just went and looked at my 519 I bought last year for my 53 Coupe 50767. Paid $2500 guy said it had a bearing noise, but could be ring/pinion ?
It is a ribbed # 9899 H5 on the bottom and A 21021on the side and a VW stamp.
Any idea what year it is ? Hope I didn't get burned and buy a VW crash box ?
If I did screw up, go ahead and give me the bad news.
Might send it to you Vic after the axles are pulled.
Not sure if the car came with smooth or ribbed ? COA says 6/23/1953
Thanks, Martin

Did some googling and some 53's and some 53's came smooth and some ribbed ?
Seems the VW crash box didn't have the breather ?

Both my '53 and '55 519s use the VW A21021 case. Review Vic's transmission identification tech article for some peace of mindMartin Bruechle wrote:Just went and looked at my 519 I bought last year for my 53 Coupe 50767. Paid $2500 guy said it had a bearing noise, but could be ring/pinion ?

James; It seems most H5 were BBAB. The other numbers; who knows.
Martin; will have to check my records when we get back next Wednesday. And you can't pull the axles like on a tunnel VW.
9899 is definitely a 356 box. Just have to see what my records show regarding approximate date of usage.
Spencer; what are your trans numbers for those two cars?

9899 H5 = 356A tranny c.1956Martin Bruechle wrote:Just went and looked at my 519 I bought last year for my 53 Coupe 50767. Paid $2500 guy said it had a bearing noise, but could be ring/pinion ? It is a ribbed # 9899 H5 on the bottom and A 21021on the side and a VW stamp.

In order to use it in your '53 Coupe the 356A axle bearing housings will have to be swapped out for pre-A housings/ shock absorber mounts. Of course, the nose cone and transmission rubber mounts on the bell housing are different, too.

Vic: 5279 and 3933. I sent you all the details on these two 519s, two 644s, two 741s and a split-case VW box a few years ago for your database.Vic Skirmants wrote:Spencer; what are your trans numbers for those two cars?

Re: A couple tranny's popped up on eBay
Thanks for the info. Didn't know about the bearing housings, are VW ones the same.
My buddy Kevin at Trans West has tons of VW crash box parts, he has had a VW tranny shop for 35 years.
Does it depend on what year brakes I run ?
Bought my 53 with no motor or trans. I have some A brakes but not sure what year they are.
Previous owner welded on sockets for banana arms and did some minor modifications by the spring plate covers.
He was going to make it IRS. I kept the whole rear end torsion housing area cut out of the 52 I parted out, this
guy also cut the fenders a little for flares (he did this stuff in the 80's). Kept about 4" of all 4 fenders from the 52 also,
he cut about 2" of the top half of the wheel wells.
The car is pretty nice otherwise, original floors, no rust, nice gaps, just a cut up dash, fenders, torsion mods.
Can't believe it has been 20 years sitting but lots of OT working, weekends for 15 years. Daughters are moved out now, working less.
I've got 95% of the parts to make it drivable. The plan is to make it a driver then tear it down later to restore.
Already have the shock mounts and early nose cone. The trans axles came without the shock mounts and has dual nose cone
so that would explain it being a 56.
