Re: Additional Gauges
OK, I'll check it out tomorrow. I'm curious on the red dash too since a couple people have said it is a cabriolet dash
and I tore it out of a 52 coupe. The red dash should be 11 for last 2 digits.

Re: Additional Gauges
Question; is my Kardex showing this as a European delivery ? That would explain the KPH Kilometers Per Hour speedometer ?
Got the correct black shift knob but should the black steering wheel be 400 or 420 mm. I've got 3 wheels and going to send one out for a restore job.
Thinking I'd prefer 400mm but should probably make it correct ? Note how he painted the speedo and tach black trim.
This car used to run in the Black Porsche Club of Los Angeles.

steering wheel should be a 400mm and i think you car is before the 1/3 horn ring.
Very cool to see a factory black wheel and shift knob, that is very rare!
Do you have the ash tray? The pre A is a little bigger than the early A version

Per Alan's post the red dash does look to be from a cabriolet with the in-dash map light and glovebox lock versus a waterfall pull handle.Martin Bruechle wrote:OK, I'll check it out tomorrow. I'm curious on the red dash too since a couple people have said it is a cabriolet dash

Normally you would see a raised area surrounding the ashtray cutout. It looks like your black dash was modified for some rally gauges and switches but you should be able to determine the position by measuring the red dash. Photo below shows the raised area on a cabriolet dash using the in-dash map light above the ashtray. (Nice problem you have - multiple dashes - which one to use? 8) ).

" (Nice problem you have - multiple dashes - which one to use? )." Exactly !
A) Modify a nice red 52 dash (that could be sold) $ ?
B) Fill a bunch of holes on the black 53 (the radio and ashtray chopped section will be a bitch) to keep the last 2 VIN #s ?
C) Cut out the red 52 radio section and ashtray section for the black 53 ?
OK, so the guy filled in the square ashtray hole then punched 2 holes for the additional gauges on the 53 black dash ?
They way I see it I need to fill on the black 53 ;
1 - Large glove box gauge hole
2 - Large gauge holes where the ashtray goes
1 - Large gauge hole at the lower left
Other holes to fill; Several smaller holes.
Toggle switch
Extra idiot light (upper left)
couple extra holes he drilled
Did the 53 black dash come with only one smaller gauge hole (fuel ?) left side of tach
And the 52 red dash came with 2 smaller gauges (fuel, temp) left side of tach

Re: Additional Gauges
I’d have to see more pics, specifically of the backside of the dash or bring it with you when you come to Jack’s party on the 22nd.

I would use the original black dash; buy a rally clock setup for the dash holes, forget about the ashtray, pickup a Veigel clock for the glovebox, oil temp, fuel and you're period correct. Maybe not factory original, but likely as modified many, many years ago by a PO. Oh, and unless you have a supply of early radios lying around, install a radio delete pod & Porsche dummy gauge in the radio cutout. With all the clocks and gauges going on you won't have time to smoke or listen to the radio =) Sale of the '52 cab dash should finance the project nicely with money left over. Like I said 'nice problem'. I'm envious. None of my projects/problems are ever self-funding. Good luck, and keep us posted on your choices please!

Re: Additional Gauges
my 2 cents would be on a km/h speedo.
and it had 2 reclining seats... those would probably be the Keiper recliners with the adjustment wheel.

I saw the same Moto Meter temp gauge listed on the Samba site for $1350 USD. That seems very high priced to me, but 2,499 Euros is really crazy money. I also question the age. It looks somewhat newer than something you would find in an early to mid-fifties pre-A car.

Re: Additional Gauges
A heads up guys, I just had the '54 speedo and tach refurbished by NHS. They have done my work for 30+ years. These two gauges cost over $3K to restore, and took eight months. Not a complaint, just be aware these early gauges are tough to get parts for.
