I'm revising again. This is the text from Authenticity 3.
The rear of the battery compartment had a circular indentation on each side. On early cars, the indentation faced back; on later cars it faced forward. The change occurred mid-1951. There are exceptions to this, with some early 1951 cars having forward facing impressions. On coupes 5215 and 5276 (1950) no impressions exist.
Can anyone add further data points? These are (were) my cars prior to restoration: #5142 rearward, #5430 forward, #10712 rearward, #54205 (1955) forward -- I don't really need anything after 1952, unless it contradicts this.

Thanks Tony,
That illustrates what I mean by forward, if it wasn't clear.
