Here's pre-restored #12347 Model 52 Gläser cabriolet. Its spare tire mounting horn has been cut off. Is this a Well Meaning Previous Owner thing? Surely not a Gläser thing? This area still retains remnants of the covered battery area, but has new jack supports.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm wondering if any further evidence surfaced regarding when one, two or no drains was used?

Beginning work on a very early 1956 Speedster #82013 (Jan. 21, 1956 according to Kardex) which still has remnants of the front drain, but the rest of the battery pan has been cut out and replaced, so no other evidence.

Without any additional data, I'm going to follow the example Dr. Johnson showed of the all original, low mile, 1956 calendar year model with a single front drain.

I do have the original driver's manual dated January 1956, and it is in much better shape than the battery floor but does not have a picture of the front bottom of the car.

Thanks very much for the confirmation. I just ordered the "IV" edition and will have it later this week, but was still using the "New Revised Edition" from 1997. Guess I've got to get more current in my reading!!

Appreciate the help.

If you didn't order it at www.tpr-inc.com, you might want to consider the Gallery access which gives you online access to the images in the book high res. It isn't available from any other vendor and is only $9.95.

Maybe a little off topic but another drain was used on 1952 cars right below the shifter. A square plate (12x12cm) with round pressing. This is on my coupe 11412 and my cabriolet 15011. it is located right below the front bolt of the shifting bracket,

Strengthening plate under shifter was used through the Model 52s. Discussed on page 26 of the new book.

That makes sense! Always thought that it was a drain plate. I will read your book again and try to remember all the details 😉
