Logo glass

#1 Post by Brad Ripley »

Today's Question for the Pre-A Corner: What logos do you find
(1) door window SEKURIT or SIGLA ?
(2) rear quarter window? SEKURIT or SIGLA ?

Some guys say they should be the same manufacturer on both.
Some say the door is Sekurit and the qtr window is Sigla. What's the Truth?

From what I've seen:

1) Door glass was always SEKURIT tempered glass on all models.

2) Quarter windows early on at least through early 1951 were SEKURIT tempered glass, but eventually by 1952/53 it was SIGLA laminated. Perhaps they were tired of breaking the tempered glass trying to get it to fit inside the window frames, so they just went with the laminated glass and could grind it as needed to make it fit.

bonus) Rear window was SIGLA laminated glass.

James and Jesse,
Thanks for the info. From another source I have also learned the same: Door glass = SEKURIT ; Rear Qtr = SIGLA . Fortunately, the glasses we had made are correct with differing logos after all.

On our '55, born Sept, Sigla on the Qrtr Lights and front windscreen, and Securit on the door glass.

Can't say about the rear as the original was cracked and we've replaced it with the old stock Securit screen one of the previous owners had bought and never fitted & unfortunately, for this question, we binned the original.

Also when I was cleaning the quarter light glass, I found 55 was etched right on the edge glass which is covered up by the frame and seals. It came as a bit of a surprise and I haven't seen a date on any of the other pieces of glass.

If you want to get really complicated, dig into the "DOT" coding on the Securit logo. There are several threads on the Samba site that discuss the coding, but this table summarizes their existence on various models. (Click on the thumbnails for expanded pictures.) One thread suggests the manufacturing date is indicated by dots above and below the letters of the logo. Obviously this deals with VW glass, but at least some Porsche glass was similarly coded. (Brad is likely aware of the dots and may be able to define the codes more thoroughly.)

I had new glass cut for my '53 cab - tempered glass but without the tempered cert and SECURIT laser etched onto the new panes (without any dots).

Per my column in the March/April 2024 Registry, photos of a new 1952 coupe from the Detroit Public Library is probably May/June 1952 production and it has hinged Sekurit windows with the early plain logo. Photos of an early July production unrestored Model 52 have the plain Sigla logo, making the change from Sekurit to Sigla rear quarter windows around June/July 1952.

The high res. photos of the DPL 1952 are on this website. Go to the home page and select the button at the top on the far right (THE 356 PORSCHE) and select the first item in the drop-down menu (MODELS) and look for the link to Pre-As. There is much more detail there.

Although I am aware that this is a cursed venture I will share what I have:
Sekurit logo with dates.jpg
I think we can all agree that the dots are some kind of a code for date or month or quarter of manufacturer... there are a lot of problems and issues... of the logos that I have images for I see one trend emerging... logos from 51 and 52 seem to be on the top side of the logo and dots appear below the logo for the year 1953 or there abouts... With 7 letters how does one correlate with 12 months or maybe 4 quarters? I have images of dots above the logo letters S, E, K, U and T... does any body have an original door glass from 1953 or earlier with a dots above the "R" or the "I"? I have images of dots below S, E, K, U, R, I,and T. In some cases there are two dots. I have made many guesses but there does not seem to be enough data to solve the puzzle. Keep in mind this is a sub nuance of the posted topic but is still relevant. Two dots and 7 letters could be month and two digit year? There are a couple of images of dots both above and below. There is another worked example for us to consider, that of TRIPLEX...

Getting good images of the logo on the glass surface is somewhat of a challenge... The second image on my top row is that of Spencer's car which was an August of 53
