Jules; the 1955 speedster, aside from some extra gauges and VW wheels, did not have any "highly modified" aspect to it. Did I miss something? Jack spurs rusted off and needing some bottom work; as well as a broken front lid, and teardrop taillights. It did not have terrible rust as found in most dilapidated 356s. Yes, I liked it better than the red 1954 speedster at Bonhams: Un-matched rear lid, Webers, no bumper guards or rocker deco, tunnel trans, and the best part: Severe badly repaired internal damage in front of the gas tank; terrible welds, much grinding to cover them, and best of all----chassis number stamped into new metal with numbers that were smaller than regular. So; what is really a 1954? That one hit $200K, only $10,000 more than the barn 55.

Hey vic, the rear end had some major work done, rear clip was replaced. The right side of the car had accident damage and the rocker looked wonky. l have seen better barn finds :). Either way, whoever won can spend 100k on a resto and still come out ahead.

I watched the entire Gooding Auction. Both days! Did I miss the 1953 in light gray?
I'd rather drive a plastic junker than be a prig.
