A follow-up on primers: I had a look at a bunch of photos of unrestored cars, and I can't make any sense of it. It seems Lechler and Glasso cars used red oxide primer most of the time, but somtimes the beige/grey. Sometimes the Perthun primer was the beige/grey, but again, not always. Perhaps since it was all nitrolack paint, they just used what primer they had, and tried to use certain ones for certain colors if it made the painting easier.

When i took my doors apart, there were very thin wooden shims ( but running the length of the door in a wedge shape), which are what you are referencing here....

Would love to see some photos of these shims. I think they are long gone on my car.

I will look for them. Put them away in 1985, believe it or not. Just finishing the body work on the car now. Only excuse is that I completely rebuilt three other cars in the interim....

Dave & Paul thanks brilliant info, as I didn't dismantle these I had no idea. Seems a bit daft to have a material that is so badly degraded by water to be fulfilling such a function. Can you give me a clue on the thickness as the plasterboard/drywall installers in the UK either use whatever bits of hardboard, cardboard or whatever stuff they have to hand or simply put up wobbly walls so there are no suppliers. They look about 1MM thick.

It is very dense cardboard, 2mm thick that I cut with a small radial saw into 12.5mm wide strips the length of the inside of the chrome trim and drilled holes aligned with the trim mounting screws. I needed one but you may need two together to shim the rubber window scraper to contact the glass.

Hopefully my downloaded picture shows up with this reply.

Wrote this info way back in 1980, and after looking through all my stuff, realized I threw away the thin strips of wood as they were likely too far gone to save. Attached should be a profile of what the strips looked like. I make furniture, so replicating this piece of wood is not really an issue for me. I appears to be about 5/8" long and 1/8" wide at its widest part.
