'55 bent windshield chip, do I need a new gasket too?

#1 Post by Tom Coughlin »

A flying stone has left its mark so I'll replace the glass in my '55 coupe.
Do I need to replace the gasket (my guess is yes), and if so what company sells the right one?

No.
You can remove the glass without slicing up the seal. Since the glass is shot, just use a hammer and bust it enough to pull the glass out of the seal, then remove the seal and reuse.
This will be messy so spread some old blankets or towels to collect the glass bits.

Thanks Dan. The reason that I guessed I would need a new gasket is that I suspect it is more than 20 years old. Tom

That's a whole nuther issue!
But hey if it's pliable, not ragged around the edges and still sealing I'd reuse it. A lot of new rubber is pure garbage. When I did my B coupe I reused the original door body seals as well as wing seals. They work and still look great.

If the old seal is still pliable enough, it will be very much easier to install than a new one as it is used to being in the correct shape.

I think Dan is right that you need to collect or at least keep track of the broken glass how about using duck tape over the entire inside before letting loose with the hammer? Better yet sell hammer hits as aggression therapy... :>)

push with your feet from the inside out, slowly applying more pressure evenly and have a helper keep the windshield from falling on the trunk. should only get a crack right in the middle, no splinters that way, no tools required. If, however, the seal is hard and old, that may NOT work.

Water pumps are for windshield washers only.

The best source for windshield and rear window seals is Cicognani in Italy. Expensive and expensive to ship (DHL only in about 10 days) but they have molded corners so they lie flat. They fit perfectly in my car, have the proper slot for the aluminum trim and installed with ease. I believe the correct part numbers for your car (one piece, bent-window) are 35365110, front, and 35365112, rear.

Thanks for the heads-up David. Those the seals that Velocespace used to import to the US, but I believe they no longer do.

Yes, these are the ones. Veloce Space is out of business but the owner was kind enough to give me the contact.

Why send off to Italy when you can have the w/s and rear window seals sent out tomorrow from a warehouse in Cleveland ?

About 1/3rd price of the Italian Rubber.
