Turbo Rings

#1 Post by Tom Kaiser »

Would appreciate your opinion :

Are these turbo rings original ? Can not find any stamping. . Rims and hubcaps on same car are stock and all stamped 5/55.

One ring has a slightly different design within the area of the valve drilling.

Tom,
Before I got my (what I believe to be original) turbo rings (late 1954) straightened and re-anodized I looked for markings and could not find any. All 5 turbo rings look like the lower one in your photo; no louver where the valve stem hole is located.

And how well did it work? I have heard it it quite hard to decently anodize something that is not new, but no knowledge as to whether that is true.

I used Miramar Metal Processing in San Diego (www.mmpus.com). Marcos Cielak, the president, was my contact person. In my opinion, they did an excellent job, especially considering how beat up the turbo rings were. Both the rings and the cast aluminum T-bolts came out looking like new.

I should mention that Marcos also was the owner of "King of Trim, LLC" when I had the rings anodized (2016). I am not sure if this part of the business still exists.

Agree with Andreas. There's no stampings on the rims. They've been reproduced several times by different people over the years.

If they're really beat up, they're probably original. =)

Looking at the originals I have, all have the gap in louvres at the valve stem hole. Also notice that the edge of the rim isn't rolled as much on the original. See photo below.

So yeah, the upper one is a repro, and the lower one may be original.

One of the differences I have found between the originals and at least some of the repros is that the louvers are slightly shorter. This can be evidenced easily by the attaching T bolts, which are shorter than the originals.

Were the original rings trimmed with rubber on the outside.

Victor
Not to my knowledge. I have had 4 sets and have never seen any rubber around the edges. One of the sets was NOS.

If anyone is in need of replacement bolts, I had a machine shop make perfect replicas from my remaining bolts and have a couple dozen that I cannot use and would part with at cost.
