Hello guys,
The fresh 1953 two piece engine is rebuilt and in. I'm a little concerned about temperatures.
I have seen the Gene Berg dipstick temp sending units, but the guy at his shop says they are too long for the 2-PC case.
Do you guys have any suggestions on other solutions for adding a temp gauge (or light like the Berg style) to this specific engine????
Thanks!
Josh

Re: Oil Temp on TWO pc case
Josh, I would look at the services from North Hollywood speedometer... http://www.nhspeedometer.com/service-restorations-356 ...that being said the temperature that is read by these gauges is only a guide for the actual temperature. There have been many discussion of temperature and how to calibrate the gauges and such. You can get a thermapen digital thermometer (http://www.thermoworks.com/Classic-Thermapen) or you can get a thermocouple form Omega (http://www.omega.com/) Or you can use some old fashion observation and common sense decision making. North Hollywood can make a reasonable gauge for your engine. The gene berg version is for the newer VW cases and is longer than the 2 piece case dip stick. The original gauge was adjustable for probe depth and most early engines had a second dip stick in the loop on the oil filter bracket or back on the fire wall. You should have a non temperature probe dip stick for checking your oil level.

Josh,
Take a look at this temp gauge on ebay - - -
eBay item number: 292126635483
You would still need a compatible sensor/ sender, and would have to figure out where and how to install it on the engine. (No connection to the seller)

Thank you both for your help! Appreciate the photos too!
I've never owned an air cooled engine and I've got a bit of a phobia. I took your advice and called North Hollywood and they'll begin work on a setup for me. I'll use one of these other suggestions until that it done, as I'm sure they will be a bit slow.
THANKS!
