Period magazine articles on pre-a
I find a great source of information on early cars is period magazine stories and particularly the photos. I suggest this topic be a list of period articles.
I'll start with the following, in no particular order:
Mechanics Illustrated, July 1952: "MI Tests the German Porsche"
Road and Track, November 1952: "Porsche Coupe Road Test", "Porsche Story", "Salon: Sam Weill's Porsche 356-4", "Porsche...Technical", "Porsche...Racing"
Auto Sport Review, April 1953: "The Porsche - Pro and Con"
Auto Age, May 1954: "Calling all Porsches"
Auto Speed and Sport, January 1953: "Auto Trial - Porsche 1500"
Auto Speed and Sport, January 1952: "Auto Trial - Porsche 1500", "Montlhery Enduro"
Speed Age, May 1953: "Testing the Porsche"
Tom McCahill on Sports Cars, 1951: "Porsche"
Please add others, and as I run across others I will also add to the list.

Good idea Alan and thanks for the list.
Some of these have been republished:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-356-U ... Swr7ZW4ehp
or
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-356-/ ... SwpIdW7uUe
Otherwise you need to buy copies of the actual magazines.

There's also:
Autosport, 5 November 1954: "A T.T. Cup Winner"
and the Motor Show magazines from 1951 are interesting.

Re: Period magazine articles on pre-a
It would be nice to get links to digital versions of these articles, but I don't know what the copyright situation would be. I could scan any of the ones I have, if we can figure a place to host them.

James,
Your mention of the4 October 18, 1954 Sports Illustrated article reminded me that I had posted a scan of that article here:

Hmm, not really sure how to post links to earlier topics, hope that works.

Thanks Alan! Link worked.
I have most of the articles in this thread scanned into PDFs. I'm sure most are still under copyright, so I won't be putting any links to them here. But I am happy to share what I have.

"Road Testing the Porsche Super", Road & Track, September 1954
"Road testing a production class winner...the Porsche Speedster", Road & Track, May 1955 (Includes the Hoffman double page ad: 'Years ahead in engineering - miles ahead on the road' with a photo of the Professor, the $2995 Speedster, a Continental Coupe and a Continental Cab - neither with their Continental badge.)
"A Tale of Two Continentals; Porsche Coupe vs. Speedster" Road & Track, January 1956 (Speedster was still $2995 and the coupe was $3590 - Speedster won the 1/4 mile drag 19.2 seconds to 19.8 seconds.)

Another one I have run across:
Auto Sport Review, January 1952: "The German Automotive Jewel Sets the Pace"
This article has some photos of the 1951 Porsche 356 SL Gmund coupe from Lemans that is being discussed in the main discussion section. Interesting to compare the photos with the restored car.

There's also:
"The New Porsche Sports Car" from The Motor, July 21, 1948.
"...And Germany Casts A Shadow" from Picture Post, October 20, 1951.
The second article really gives a flavour of the mood of some towards Germany in the UK at the time.
