1952 Knecht mesh filters for 527 engines

#1 Post by James Davies »

I would like to find out the variety of Knecht filters used on type 527 (1500) engines in late '51 through late '52. These would be the mesh filters used on 32 PBI carbs with the 52mm hole. I know there were a few different types. Here's a few that I've seen. Feel free to add photos or descriptions of more.

As far as I can tell, they came in at least two different heights and the earliest ones had just the small Knecht logo. Later they added the "Bei Verschmutzung reinigen und einölen" text and made the logo larger.

Morning James (well it is here anyway).
I have two sets of the knecht filter at home, one for a 1500 normal and the other for the S. They may be later than you are looking for but I will post some photos when I get home.

Thanks Hendrik.

The tall Knecht that were common on all pre-A cars 1953-55 with the Solex 32 PBI carbs were also used on some 527 motors. Here's a photo from an export-bumper 1952 cabriolet with type 527 motor featured in Auto Sport Review (April 1953).

I should maybe correct myself. It looks like the tall ones (85mm) had two different sizes of embossings on top. The 1952 ones shown above have a larger embossing than these 1955 ones I have from engine P-34406. Never noticed this before.

EDIT:

And the ones with the larger embossed logo and writing were used up through at least late-May 1953 judging from a factory photo of a 546 engine.

I have a set of the tall filters, they have different versions of the Knecht logo embossed on them.
And I have a set of the small ones with the same Knecht logo embossed.
Am trying to up load the photos onto photobucket, but it's not playing at the moment.

Thanks Hendrik. Your first set are Knecht for Solex 32 PBIC for 356A 1956-57 I believe. The English translated text on the top is the giveaway. Pre-A and the first 1600 ones only had the German text.

Your 2nd set are mix of 528 (528/2) for Solex 40 PBIC (or PICB) on the right, and Zenith 32 NDIX on left. The English writing is a giveaway for those on the left, and the mesh on the left one looks also to be perforated instead of woven strands, which was a later improvement. I suspect the one on the left also doesn't have a vertical metal strip holding the mesh together like the one on the right.

Thanks for sharing!
