Re: 4 '51 Coupe questions....

#16 Post by Jim Hardie »

Hi, again, All

Well..I think a final check with everyone is a good idea:

--Does anyone have a pic of the front and/or rear of the top of the door where the alum caps sit?

--Any chance that 10627 came without alum caps??

Really appreciate everyone's input and knowledge!

Thanks, Jim

I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for helping Jim Hardie and I with the restoration of this incredible car. Without the knowledge and input of so many dedicated people this car wouldn't be restored to such a level of authenticity paying tribute to the beauty of Porsche design. Again thank you all for your help and dedication. My beautiful 10627, "GOD willing" will be on the road this spring.

Thank you once again

Jim

Hope these help. The window frame is mounted loose in the door so the front gap is incorrect.

Yet another thank you to everyone....we are pretty sure now with some confidence what the answer is to each of the four questions. We did receive a note from Robert Brocker with pics of two different door tops, each from '51, an 'early' and 'late' door style with and without the metal 'stands' which would be under the alum caps.

So, one last questions: Did the Factory undercoat the inside of the door wells on a June '51 coupe?

Thanks all. Jim

Yes, the photos I posted above are from mid-'51 and show the early type without metal stands. The wood door tops are a bit longer for these I suspect? The aluminum pieces screw directly into the wood garnish rail. The photos from Spencer and Tony are from late '51 and early '52 I believe. The garnish rail is a bit shorter on these.

I don't think mid-'51 cars had undercoat inside the door skin as did the later pre-A and A cars. I believe they had some horse hair padding glued on instead. Perhaps others can chime in.

Photo of driver door 11341 (51/52) showing what looks like undercoating and the horsehair padding James refers to.

Undercoating but no padding showing on the passenger door. It may have come unglued and fallen off years ago - or was maybe never installed on the passenger side. (When I zoom in on the high-res photo the color variation appears to be sunlight glare.)

Happy Holiday all!

Spencer and James, thanks for the responses and pics! Again, helpful... Steve is gonna' post some photos!! She is really coming together...

My question was to determine if there was sprayed on undercoating inside the door wells, forward of the doors?

Thoughts??

Well we have color! She’s looking really good, beautiful Adria Blue fine metallic. As you can see by the contour of the floor that they are original. The only rust this car had was a 2”square area under the gas pedal and of course the battery floor. Exterior paint will be next week. 12-03-19.
Again, thank you all very much for your time and dedication.

Glad to help. I drug those '51 doors around for nearly forty-years. I'm glad they're getting the attention they deserve & they found a good home with Tony's coupe :D
