Porsche 356 SALES BROCHURES COLLECTION BOOK

#1 Post by William Block »

Silk, aka the fabulous Freda thinks the days of paper books may be over. However, the same was said to be true about vinyl records; which are now resurgent. Perhaps this has something to do with age -- both of the reader and of the Porsche. Air-cooled Porsche books are more popular than water cooled (not that this is saying much), early 911 books are more popular than later, and the 356 reigns supreme. And extremely over the top editions (high class paper, printing, graphics and price), sell their admittedly limited production runs -- with the grossly over priced, special binding, publisher’s edition selling out first. The other variable is tight focus, most particularly a subject which is in itself very limited with a collector following. These are books written by someone with a specific passion. The good news, i suppose, is that all of these books tend to appreciate beyond their original already inflated list prices.

The latest over the top books have all had a tight focus: Snodgrass Carrera 2.7 MFI & turbo 3.0; Gruber & Konradschein Porsche Carrera RS, ed 2; Barth, Franz, Weber Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8. Now we have Mark Weigh’s Porsche 356 SALES BROCHURES.

Mark has form -- Porsche Centrum Gelderland was established in 2006. In 2015 it became Porsche’s first stand alone Porsche Classic Center -- an official Porsche dealer specializing in “classic” Porsches only.

Over the top hardly covers the almost 5+ kg (more than 10 pounds in imperial notation), 576 pages of Porsche 356 brochures from the year 1948 to 1966.  Even the standard edition is beautifully bound and comes with a black slip case. The paper is high class, as is the printing.

Rather clever -- as well as the usual table of contents, is a timeline showing portions of the appropriate brochures and two pages of 356 evolution with drawings of appropriate 356 models and the years Christophorus covers.

I have no idea if the book is truly complete, but I do know, no where else will you find more entries.
Who knew there were more than 150 PreA brochures? A look at the acknowledgments covers the entire universe of literature collectors -- if they aren’t aware of it, it probably doesn’t exist.

So it’s beautiful and “complete.” The book is a must-have for literature collectors as well as book collectors and any Porsche enthusiast wanting a definitive and beautiful book. Others may find at it too specialized. Unfortunately part of it’s beauty is its artistic presentation -- the brochures are almost invariably presented in shrunken form with lots of surrounding white space. This results in most type too small to be read without a magnifying glass.

Brochures are not limited to Porsche but also suppliers. Among the most interesting is one by Accla. Fairly well known and seen with some frequency on Speedsters is Acella Best Posterplastic 52150, a yellow-tan fabric with exposed fabric weave. Never seen in real life but pictured in the Acella brochure are Posterstoff 3142 -- orange with a willow-like pattern on black stripes and a photographic of a 53 sunroof with and cross between a reptile and an El Auatsri fabric.

Beyond 356 sales brochures are price lists, accessories , color charts and Porsche Christophorus magazine covers, aircraft engines, prices lists of the most obscure places, color charts by year, accessories -- if it had something to do with the Porsche during the 356 period, was printed and could conceivably be called “literature” it’s probably in there.

Amazingly Porsche 356 SALES BROCHURES COLLECTION BOOK has no ISBN. It is available from Porsche Centrum Gelderland, NEDERLAND and in the US from BLOCK-BOOKS.com.

Thanks Bill for bringing this to my attention, my copy has just arrived, I had a quick look, before I hid it away as it's a Christmas pressie, and the quality is simply super.
