Beware: Stoddard 741 Brake bands

#1 Post by Christopher Jansons »

Hi everyone.
I wanted to alert everyone about a batch of bad brake bands for the 741 transmission. I contacted Stoddard where I bought them, to let them know. I didn't get an idea that they were going to 'get on it' but they offered me a RA#.

The brake bands have the wrong arch and don't contact the synchronizing ring correctly.
Photos of the offending:

Note; of the three photos of the brake bands in place, the first photo is the Porsche factory band, the other two the 'new', problematic, band. In all three photos I am twisting the syncro to show contact. :!:

Nice pictures.
I would suspect that the bigger problem might be the angle with which the band contacts the block. I hope someone much more knowledgeable than I comments.

Hi
they look like early 901 bands I don't know if Porsche superseded the original 741 no.

At the moment, the German supplier is checking their stock and comparing against good used originals.
