Reproduction of Extremely Rare Convertible D Manual

For quite some time I have been trying to acquire a copy of the 8-page booklet entitled “Operating instructions for the Opening and Closing of the Convertible Top” for the 1959 Convertible Ds. Given the booklet’s age and rarity, very few have survived to this day, and most of those that have are in relatively poor shape with tears, creases, missing and yellowed pages, rusty staples, water and grease stains, etc. A fellow Convertible D owner kindly loaned me his original booklet so that I could have it replicated. That booklet had the typical water stains, yellowed pages, etc. but was otherwise in pretty good shape. I took the booklet to a graphic artist who scanned it into his computer and painstakingly cleaned up each of the scans, removing all of the booklet’s defects. He did an amazing job. I then took the scans to a local printer. We spent some time finding a match for the color, weight and texture of the linen stock used for the original cover and the color of the graphics on the cover. By chance, the printer happened to have a single ream of some NLA paper that was a perfect match for the inside pages both in terms of weight, color and sheen. After the booklet was printed, it was saddle stitched just like the original. I am extremely pleased with the end result. It is an excellent match for the original in all respects. I thought that other D owners and collectors of vintage Porsche literature might also like to own a reproduction of this very rare booklet so I ordered some extra copies. If you would like to purchase a copy, please let me know. Copies are limited. The cost is $65, which includes shipping and tracking inside the USA. International orders are $70. Thanks.

I have learned that some people have experienced difficulty contacting me through the Registry's email system, so feel free to contact me directly at prs356@comcast.net

I received my copy today, and can say that if it was not marked as a "re-print" one would never know it wasn't original. Very nicely done Peter.

I was looking back at an email exchange I had with Roy Lock regarding the Convertible D booklet and a similar one Porsche issued for the Roadster. According to Roy, the reason they were issued is because the D and Roadster tops folded differently than the tops for the Cabs and many new customers of the Conv D and the Roadster ruined their car’s tops when folding them. I also learned that the D booklet was provided to early roadster owners, at least until the roadster booklet came out a year later. The contents of the two booklets are virtually identical. The only difference is that the latches for the two cars are different and the photos which show the latches reveal that difference.
