Screen Dim assistance, please?
I'm working on a sump plate which would replace the two paper gaskets with an O-ring seal, but I need to get a reading on more than the couple of screens I have available.
I need to see if the folded sections are typically ~.170" at the corners, measured as above. This one has been trimmed of its flange, but the dimension was the same prior to that, so any you have floating around and can measure would help.
Thanks much.

Re: Screen Dim assistance, please?
Will this complement the Mainely sump plate Ron, or is it to be a stand-alone item?

Jeffrey,
Pre Mat products in general get improvements where possible and the Mainely designs are going through the same process.
Assuming the design is workable (dims, please!), the plates will likely be offered both ways unless there's a clear preference, in which case only the preferred version will be stocked.
As an example of the improvements, we had to make a run of the 'drain-plug' 356 sump plates and took the opportunity to add a 'port' to drain the last (and dirtiest) oil out:

Thanks Ron. And I like the improvement, too.

Perhaps helpful:-
My original C engine screen measures 0.173 - 0.182", dependent upon where measurement taken on the varying thickness soft Al roll.
Replacement screens may be different and vary, dependent upon the supplier.
Carry on,

Wil,
Did yours have a steel flange?

It's an Al flange. Thickness is 0.025" between bolt holes, and 0.023" around bolt holes because of repeated compression/elongation of the soft Al. If desired, can make/send photo.

Ron; I thought you were asking about the sump plate, not the screen?

Re: Screen Dim assistance, please?
Vic,
No, it's that folded portion of the screen that's in question.
I know there are screens with steel flanges, but those seem to be early engines with the 13mm(?) oil pickups. And then ones with aluminum flanges (later engines).
But the "height" of that folded portion is going to define the cut for the O-ring and I'm hoping they are roughly consistent.

Re: Screen Dim assistance, please?
Ron, how are you going to get o-rings on both sides of the screen? If not, why bother with just an o-ring on the plate? Gaskets work fine and don't leak if the studs are installed with loctite. I guess I'm not understanding. I like the drain slot.

Re: Screen Dim assistance, please?
Cliff,
I stumbled over that exact issue until I came up with a bit of geometry which will do what's needed. In this case, a picture is worth a whole lot of words, and right now, it exists between my ears until I satisfy the dims.
Which is the reason I'm hoping to get some...

Re: Screen Dim assistance, please?
Ok. The other thing about those screens...I always reuse the old ones unless the screen has pulled out of the crimp or there is a hole because they are so expensive. The aluminum often has bends and gouges and other signs of abuse that might be a problem for an o-ring to conform to. Yamabond or Hylomar on the gaskets takes up the irregularity. Sorry, I'm being a negative Nancy! I will wait to see what you devise.

Ron, I'd be glad to help, I just don't understand what you're asking for. What is the folded section?Ron LaDow wrote:Geeze! One bit of help? C'mon, you got a screen and a caliper!
