1964-1968 Grey Vinyl Messko Tire Gauge Pouch

#1 Post by Carl Bauer »

After doing a number of small projects for early 911 owners I'm back in the 356 world and currently working on a reproduction of the grey Messko tire gauge pouch. I was able to borrow two very nice originals to base my reproduction on.

From my research (still ongoing and please correct me if I'm wrong) 1963 356's did not come with a tire gauge at all. You got one in the '64 toolkit and they all had a grey pouch until the end of '68. 1969 911's and 912's most likely did not have a tire gauge but if you did want a Messko from the parts dept. you could get one after '68 and it would have come with a grey pouch.

To summarize: The grey pouch is correct for 356/911/912 1964-1968 and then 1969 onwards as an over the counter spare part.

These haven't been available for a very long time and will make their debut at the LA Lit Show in a few short weeks. :D

Work on the Messko pouch is moving along here in Denver. The die is complete so we must be getting close! Brass rule for the simulated stitch sealed edge and stainless steel for the graphics.

Down to the wire on these to have them ready in time for the Lit Show! So close in fact that they'll be shipped out overnight on Thursday to be at my hotel in LA by Friday mid-afternoon.

Here's a pre-production one off this morning. I've asked them to slightly tone down the depth of the Messko stamp and given them the go ahead.

Well, as many as you may have learned at the Lit Show on Saturday morning I had the Messko pouches in hand but they were not properly finished. The simulated stitch along the outside of the top flap was not embossed entirely and I am working with the manufacturer here in Denver to get it and the Messko stamp itself right.

They expect 2-3 weeks and I'll be pushing them along the whole way. I know many of you were excited to pick one up in person and I was just as disappointed as you guys. You guys will know as soon as they're complete and I'm sorry they weren't ready at the Lit Show as I promised!

Does your reproduction pouch have anything on it to indicate that it is a reproduction?

Peter,

Yes there will be a difference besides natural, subtle differences like the softness in the vinyl, etc. When they are finally complete I will post a comparison photo.

Woo Hoo! I went and looked at the 2nd sample run of grey Messko pouches today and they've finally got them right. Nice, light Messko stamp and the simulated stitching all the way around the front flap.

I was told they'd be here next week.

Picked up the Messko pouches yesterday morning. Cut open the box at their office and I'm very happy with them! Sorry for the crappy iphone pic but they're nice.

I'll start a proper for sale post shortly. As before, they're appropriate for 64-68 356/911/912 with a Bakelite Messko.
