Sound/Insulation
Just got a tip that Bill Perrone has a limited supply of his "factory correct" tar-based sound insulation again for most 356 models. If you are looking for authenticity, this is as close as it gets. Bill is the proprietor of THE PARTS SHOP (714-894-3112) -- a Registry approved vendor. Give him a call if you need a set.

Thanks Tarrik - I contacted Bill today and ordered the kit for the front trunk - great resource. He mentioned that he only had a very limited number of kits for the engine compartment.

Bill, I posted some notes on installing Bills kit a few years back. Can send if desired.

Re: Sound/Insulation
The sound deadening kit from The Parts shop (for the trunk) seems very good, but it was also very expensive. How is the kit that Stoddard sell, is it ok?
I have to pay both for the shipping to Sweden, duty and tax so (unfortunately) it becomes very expensive.
Are there any other good suppliers of sound deadening kits for the (356C) trunk?

Hello and thank you!
But do they have the right kind of sound deadening material for a 356 C trunk? They look most like to have more modern sound deadening materials.
Greetings
Tomas

Tomas - You are correct - it is definitely the more modern tech. not the bitumen base that was used in factory on the 356.

In 2007, I had a carburetor fire in my 65C coupe that destroyed the firewall insulation.Tomas Melander wrote:The sound deadening kit from The Parts shop (for the trunk) seems very good, but it was also very expensive. How is the kit that Stoddard sell, is it ok?
Jones Autowerks in San Antonio, TX (which did the repairs) ordered the engine compartment insulation package from Stoddard. It was not a good match to the original, and we sent it back.
I then ordered the kit from The Parts Shop, and it was very close to the original pattern and material. However, that was 5 years ago, and I don't know what Stoddard is currently selling for this purpose.

Re: Sound/Insulation
Does anyone know what the original material is called and what it is made of?
Earlier, I had a VW convertible that had the same type of materials in the hood padding and in the seats.
... but, again, what is it????

Re: Sound/Insulation
Thomas,
i suppose it depends on how original you want to be. I made a pattern out of heavy paper and traced it onto the black roofing material we call tar paper. It is available in usa in rools and comes in at least 2 thicknesses. I useds asphalt adhesivve to "glue" two sheets together to get close to propper thickness. To get the "waffle pattern" i bought some wire mesh of about the same pattern size and used my shop press to imprint the pattern onto the tar paper. (I suspect you could also just use plywood and a cat as a press.)
just a lighy spray of rattle can undercoating and voila
not perfect but neither is my car and the price was right.

Re: Sound/Insulation
Hello!
Well, I want it to be very original and will probably order it from The Parts Shop.
I have put so much work on it so far so it would be a shame if it was not perfect in the end.
Funny, in Sweden there is a large company named Kuntze, who sells sound deadening material!
http://www.kuntze.se
However, not the type of sound deadening material that I'am looking for.
