As I noted before, it is not just about Club management. Among other things, it is about having discussions like this among ourselves. You know, when I was a sprout and my sister and I were tusseling about something out in public, Dear Old Dad would remind me that it showed consideration for others as well as being Good Form to keep family business in the family. Those are still words of wisdom.

As one who is no stranger to IT issues, I can't see that there is only "no solution" or "give me all your dough" when it comes to solving this problem. What I do see is a distinct lack of any willingness to try. If some overlay program is screwing things up, get rid of it. And that doesn't cost a dime.

As for the work-arounds mentioned, they are narrowly-focused and, in the long run, would take more effort (and cost) than implementation of a Members Only forum.

No, the only thing holding us back is the disappointing lack of popular support due to an inability/unwillingness to see the many advantages that could accrue from this clear line of communication among the members of this club. Pity.

2,210 hits and no one has anything to say.... What's up with that? Forget the technical "issues"; does no one see the possibilities?

Keep 'em flying...

On the other thread about real names, I posted a note that I remember the requirement at some point in time to have a log in word required to see the Goodie Store on the old site. Could something like that be useful and possible here. I agree, as a 16 year member of the 356 Registry, it would be nice to be able to read about discussions that the leadership has regarding various issues--why not do it?!

Yesterday I downloaded the IRS form 990 for FY2009 for the registry. It can be seen at Guidestar.org. Unfortunately it is several pages long and in a PDF--I couldn't upload a PDF on this site because whatever software we use won't deal with PDFs.. A real start to more transparency would be to post the 990 forms somewhere on this site. Most enlightened non profits do that on their sites. Why not here? It is a requirement from IRS that they be available to the public anyway so why make folks go somewhere else to find it?

Bye the way, when I reviewed the last 3 990s, I was impressed with the management's stewardship of the organization's funds and was surprised to note they have approximately a $470K reserve in the bank.

That seems like a crazy amount of cash for a car club to be sitting on. What are our monthly expenses? How many months will $470k take us? Is this a typical amount of cash to have on hand for a non-profit of our size? I thought that the objective was to give benefit to the members and that too much cash was a bad thing. I am NOT pointing fingers. I truly want to know what the norm is.

Larry, maybe I shouldn't have used the word enlightened. In the medical non-profit world there is a move to post 990s somewhere on their site if they are trying to raise funds for various charitable missions. The Better Business Bureau now has standards that include posting 990s on websites of non-profits that raise funds through contributions.

I do not belong to any other car clubs other than PCA and the Registry, but I understand that BMWCCA has a number of requirements related 990s for its Chapters -- http://bmwcca.org/content/news/2009/news200901.pdf

More transparency, in my opinion, is a good thing and there is no reason not to post 990s since they can be obtained from the IRS or Guidestar.
