Dumb luck...

#1 Post by Greg Banfill »

Finding (and buying) a 2 Pre A's in 4 months seems pretty lucky, especially for my first 2 356's

The story is as the title say, dumb luck.
I had my current '54 sitting outside my shop one day and I got the typical "I know a guy that has one of those he'd sell" from a guy going by.
Learning to follow up on all leads I found this car located just north of San Francisco sitting for +/- 20 years at a bargain price.

The COA says it was originally Silver with Red interior. Same as my other '54. It was a driver until the trans started "clunking" per the previous owners description.

I'm going to fire it up and make sure the engine is cool and then pull everything out for a trans rebuild.

Here's some pics.

Where it sat for many years.

Rolled into the driveway with the proper '54 plates and reg.

On the tow truck heading home.

Engine is out of an SC

Interior looks decent for the driver it will be.

Aside from the trans work I'll be looking for some bumpers and proper mirrors.
Wheels and tires will change as well as the stance.

Engine runs / sounds great.
Trans is coming out next week.
Spindles are built
Wheels were picked up from Al yesterday.
I'd like to be driving it by Kelley Park, but not sure that will happen.
I'll post new pics once it's off the stands.

Wonderful. Let me make another guess. Your last car was a unique VW bug. Slammed, bagged, on earlies. :?

So you're not a fan of what I want to do with my car.
That's fine.

Here's some of my current and past cars if you're really interested.

I don't do bags either way.
I lower them and drive them as is.

I use the RONCO method, "Set it and forget it" That way it can all be unbolted and put back to stock if someone wants. No harm no foul.

This isn't the place to get into a stock vs modified debate

Great website with some really unique v dubs. Any chance you're going to update any of your T-shirts with the Iron Cross and the Pre A? I'd be interested in a few if you do.

Greg,
If your white coupe ends up with a stance similar to the one in your avitar, it's going to look stellar. Photos, photos and more photos.

ps: I'll introduce myself at a bus show sometime.

Wow say it isn't so.

I think that is the car that I almost bought a few years back but the owner changed his mind after he got a new job.

It was parked in S.F., at the wifes house "divorced" with parking priviledges in the upper sunset district.

I remember the owner rebuilt the engine himself and it wan't a matching 3 peice case.

He said the tranny went out right near where it was parked. Not rusty and the interior had no musty smells.

Great time capsule early outlaw. notice the 4 pipe exhaust, no decos and nerf bars.

I'll see it around and think...........Oh well.

Wanna trade for a 2003, 100th Anniversary Heritage Springer?

Cheers

Thanks for the nice words guys.
Please do introduce your self at the next show Greg....Kelley Park maybe??

This sounds like the same car to me Scott.
Divorce., rebuilt "non stock" engine, etc.
Small world huh? I was in a same "iffy" situation with the seller. He was hard to get a solid answer out of, so as soon as we had a deal I gave him cash and called a tow truck.

If I can come up with a good design I might do some 356 shirts.

Not interested in any trades though.

I'll get some pictures next week. When I get back to wrenching on it.
