For the front of the engine I used a stock 356 piece that I had to modify to fit with the VW tins. On the side pieces below the carbs I made them out of flat sheet metal with a 90 degree brake on the outer edge which I welded a seal channel to. This allowed me to use the rubber sealing lip on the tin like Porsche uses as opposed to the seal being on the body in the VW. The bell housing tin is a stock VW piece. I used VW heater boxes which I modified the outlet to clear the body (The outlet needs to point straight back and not be so tall). This gave me true heat not stale air like Porsche. If you notice in the picture a black expandable hose, that is for the heat which is recirculative into the cabin. The heater ran in-line fans to circulate the heat but it drew its air from in the cabin which allowed it to heat up faster. Hope this helps.

Great work Jim, Nice to see early cars looking stock but far from it.. That's the best bit.
Did that heating mod work ok? I only ask I am looking at the heating on my 54 for the main reason in the UK it's mainly cold or damp. So I know that clearing the mist from the inside of the Windscreen is going to be a key thing to over come and one one I hope to try and do. Remembering speedster days when the wipers where going like mad and I also was going as mad in the inside with a cloth to be able to see out the window!!!

The engine for my '54

I was setting it up for a Bus I have but the Porsche is taking precedence over that.
I too will be running a 911 style shroud / fan, the A-1 exhaust I'll use on the Bus and I'll have Tiger make me up something for a 356 w/ heater boxes instead, carbs and intakes will remain but I am going with a "hidden" twist linkage behind the shroud, and a magneto to clean up the engine bay. I will have to ditch the current mag mount / clamp and fab something else to use with the 911 shroud though.

Here's a better shot of it on the stand.

Well, I came across a complete '54 driver yesterday that will make a better base for what i have in mind, so this car may possibly be for sale. I don't have space or time for both as much as I'd like to keep 2 Pre-A's in my garage.

Once I have it on my trailer or at my shop that will happen. I'm trying to get a 2nd car from the same guy and don't want to give out any hints of who or where it is just yet.

I'd still like to do something with the body besides leave it in "rust"

125's in the front
195/60/15's in the rear

The "pan" is the stock Porsche metal. Nothing VW about it.

The rusty car is still in the US. The owner isn't on here so I doubt we'll see anything about it from now on.

The white car, yeah I still have it.
It's in a holding pattern right now.

After my Classic "debut" a little over a year ago I decided to go back through what I rushed the first time around. I pulled the donor tranny (Rancho has since rebuilt it for a VW project) and dropped the OG tranny with a "reputable" Nor Cal re builder. That was a year ago in July and if I didn't have other issues (family and car related) I'd be pissed but oh well. live and learn. FYI Rancho has done 2 for me in 4 weeks or less for other cars since dropping my OG one off with the Nor Cal re-builder. So the lesson here is use Rancho!!

The engine was / is another sore subject. I pulled it along with the trans and dropped it with a self proclaimed VW /Porsche engine expert for some minor tuning and oil leak fixes (amazing how cracked seals that sit for 25+ years get) long story short, 8 months later my nice detailed engine had been sitting outside his shop in the elements untouched. $500 later for "services rendered" I got it back and with everything else going on sat it in the back of my shop along side the tranny-less car and figured I'd get to it later.

I've been picking up some cool parts for it while it's waiting and I plan / expect to be driving it again next spring.
