Just had a bit of grief, when we stuck the motor back in after welding in the rear bars, it dropped 10 mil, it's one heavy mutha. So had to re-weld the rear mounting bar to compensate. Also with the apparent extra weight it looks very much like we'll be fitting a spare pair of Koni coil-overs I have lying around to boost the old 356 torsion bars. I'm not sure on availability of beefed up 356 torsion bars although I do know 911 items can be obtained, it just seems easier to fit the coil-overs and then play around with much cheaper and better available springs. It's all fun and games innit, for most people all they have to worry about is getting the correct finish on their 10mil screws.

And even more grief, out with my cycling club last Sunday, I hit a pothole at speed, took a tumble and the result was a broken shoulder. It's going to take two months to repair so no lifting or heavy work until then. What a bugger, I wish I could be welded!

All of a sudden it's all gone a bit bonkers, I'm in the process of moving house, looking for something with a four car garage, at least, every weekend there is classic and Porsche car events happening, just got my Tremec five speed box in from the States for my Cobra, then there is the Goodwood festival of speed on my doorstep this coming weekend and I'm in the middle of a restoration of my 1933 Hobbs racing bike. Gosh, busy, busy. But the good lads who are headlining my 356 outlaw have been making progress even with the bent and twisted body shell I gave them to work with. I thought it was pretty much straight but it took an expert to tell me it was really only fit for demolition derby racing. But nil desperandum we shall stick it on the celete and have it right. However getting the rear suspension aligned was a real pain but it's all about spot on now although it was decided to fit a pair of Koni coil overs I had left over from a McClaren to assist in the rear suspension. The upper mounts are yet to be located and welded but this job will be quite straightforward. I have to convert all the fuel fittings on the Zenith carbs to metric to enable me to get all A & N and braided lines equipment. If this does look over expensive I might just go for some PMO carbs as any Webers I might locate would more than likely need complete rebuilds. The other item on the immediate menu is big front brake calipers and discs to replace the existing stock 944 set up that was fine for my beefy 4 banger but may be a little strained for 6 cylinder power. I am also hoping to obtain a 356 registration number, it's an auction run by our licencing body so it's down to how much you want to spend to get the number but I'll give it my best shot.

Hi Graham
Just an observation, Is that suspension arm , only tacked on with weld for positioning? Looks like it also requires a strap or brace! Also, is that Bolt rating strong enough where it holds the strut ? Good work, You are very brave with the 911 unit hanging out the back!
Cheers Jay

Hi Jay, yeah just tacked on to get the camber and settings up to spec and I expect my pal stole a bolt off his John Dere in order to temporarily hold things in place. I'm down on the farm next Wednesday to get stuck in. The next big job will be running the oil pipes up front to the oil tank and cooler. Not sure where everything is going yet but it will definitely be up front. Also I recently fitted a factory short shift kit to my turbo look Carrera so I have the old bits which with another old housing hope to fit for the 915 gearbox.

There have been a few health problems of late but thankfully this is all now in the past and I'm steaming ahead with the car now. It was hoped that the 911 oil tank might be useable fitted into the right side rear fender but there is just not enough room especially as the exhaust box might sit up there like the positioning on 997s. So we fabricated a custom tank to be sited on the rear firewall above the engine. There are hard lines now through to the front nearside fender going through the sills which will connect to a small oil cooler. We have a specialist coming to make up an exhaust. It will be a bit difficult to position the silencers due to a real shortage of room. I was thinking along the lines of a pair of straight pipes with internal baffles like the guys with rods that run zoomie headers on the street but 911 motors are just plain noisy so that thought got deep sixed and it's going to get something a little more sano. One slight problem that reared its' ugly head was the fact that the car had had a fairly severe rear impact in its dim and distant past. This became apparent when doing all the measuring for the rear suspension and fitting the 915 trans. The car had been smacked on its' rear right but the repair which was mainly plastic filler disguised this. Although I tried to pull the body back to shape with a porta power I didn't get enough movement so we had no alternative but to insert a 2" down to zero strip of metal from the top of the right rear fender down to the bottom to correct the deficit. This was quite a severe operation involving lots of eyeballing and hammer welding but it all came good in the end and I now have a completely square motor car.
I have never been completely happy with having to run Zenith carbs on my 2.4 so I had the opportunity to get hold of a set of 40 IDA Webers and manifolds and I'm sure they will release a few more horses, and continuing to spend my money I have had the 6 and 7" x 16 Fuchs rims fully polished and fitted with Toyo Proxes. I really wasn't sure if a fully polished wheel would look good but my wife said Do It so I did it and I must say they do look rather splendid if maybe just a tad too blingy.

You could have added a wedge on both quarter panels, providing room for 9” rims, once you were modifying the body. It’s looking good. A monster!

Actually I have a spare set of 9" rims that I had fully polished and I run them on my 911 in the Summer but I don't want to interfere with the body lines of the 356 in any way and I think that 7" rims on the rear with sticky 205.50 Toyo Proxes will provide sufficient grip. Torsion bars ? Dunno really, I'll have to sort that out a bit later.
Anyway to business and we're rockin' ahead. Got the oil pipes all routed forward from the custom oil tank with a remote oil filter housing in line. They run through the right sill up to a little oil cooler in the right front fender. I'm not going to punch any holes in the front clip for additional cooling but just hope that the forward positioning of the cooler plus the length of the oil pipes and normal air flow will provide sufficient cooling for the motor. And check out the exhaust! We got a specialist in to bend it up and boy did he ever do a nice job. It was as I originally thought, he positioned the little mufflers ala 997 up in the back of the rear fenders, this has made for a really clean rear end and I'm thinking of getting a Carrera rear valance like on the four cams although I may just ask my main man to fire up his English wheel and plannishing hammer and beat one up for me.
The next tasks will be to fit the Webers, hook up fuel lines to the big Carter fuel pump then take a look see at what gear selection linkage we can sort out. Hopefully this shouldn't be too problematical as it's a straight shot from the existing gear lever back to the 915 trans.
So it's looking good timewise and with a bit of luck it should be ready for Classic Le Mans 2020 in July.
PS In the meantime I'm off to the Porsche museum in March, it's only a couple of hours flight time, bit more from your side of the pond though!
PPS Seasons Greetings to all and happy holidays

That’s a nice job on the exhaust system. What are the supporting straps on the mufflers hanging from?

I have a friend with a '62 Cab with a 1969 911S engine and 901 transaxle. I've driven this car quite a bit and it is a blast to drive. Sure, the rear end is heavier, but lacking swing axles it is actually at least as predictable that my Roadster. You do have to get pretty good at removing the engine/trans for most engine maintenance, since there is NO spare room. But, in the balance, if you don't mind doing a huge amount of work, the results are terrific fun!

Blimey, I do hope it isn't civilised, I've got a 911 to be civilised in. I just hope it will be a tail happy wagon cos I love a bit of opposite lock. And re the mufflers we're extending the lower valve cover studs to fit a small support bracket for them. The motor is in there tight but it will pop out without too much drama, it's got a new clutch so that's one problem out of the way.

Thanks Harry, shoulder was a straight break so it healed up quickly, in fact I went for my last hospital visit on my Buell. But cycling has been tough this year due to the nasty weather here this Winter. If it's not freezing cold it's bucketing down with rain plus the winds have been 60 to 80mph. Roll on Spring and I know you guys have it tough there too. So to the car and it is so very close to fire up time. The exhausts are finished - beautiful job if I say so myself, the MSD is in place and hooked up ditto the Carter pump and fuel filter and all the plumbing for the fuel and oil lines are in their correct position. The outstanding jobs to do list are gear linkage but it's a straight shot from the end of the trans to the lever so the existing 356 lever with a short travel fitting should hit all five gears. The throttle linkage which when I had the four cylinder motor in the car was operated by a tandem bicycle rear brake cable. Don't laugh, it worked perfect even with a pair of IDF's so it should be OK for the IDA's now fitted. Clutch cable to be run, although I'm going to look at possibly fitting up an hydraulic system. A simple master up front to a bracketed slave on the trans. We are going to fabricate an access panel in the rear over the trans where the bodywork got cut out. This will make getting at the starter and trans a heck of a lot easier. And I've just got a load of Dynamat to go everywhere in the hope of quietening the car which was excessively noisey previously.
We have an aircooled only meet coming up in the UK on 17th May, it's called Classics at the Castle, it's a 12th Century or thereabouts old fortress, there's loads of this old stuff around here, and that is the target to get the car completed. Then, of course, Classic Le Mans where I'll be joined with 5 other early 911s and we'll drive down to Le Mans, actually we'll race down to Le Mans knowing these guys. And we all have just come back from the huge Retro Classics event at Stuttgart taking in the Porsche museum for a quick weekend away before all air travel is banned due to you know what.
