Re: Type A Outlaw Project
Sorry for the confusion. It is a 741 with a Type A nose cone (comes out above the tunnel). I am building a shift tower so I can use a straight shift tube connected directly to the Type A shaft.

Re: Type A Outlaw Project
Perry,
Here are some photos of the shift tower I installed in my 59A Cab. It was made by the late Ken Doughtery and I think his son may still be selling them. It was copied from the one in Ray Knight’s Sauter roadster and is the same as those in Gumund race cars. I use a 741 transmission with an A nose cone and A axel tubes/brakes in my car.
There is more text on the install toward the bottom of page 13 on my thread “Restoring 151489 - Building a Faux Cam Carrera” in the projects section.
The shift lever is a standard VW part. The shift rod is a VW bus part cut to length and then the coupler part is welded in.
Let me know if you need any measurements or more detailed photos.

Re: Type A Outlaw Project
I finished it. Thank you for the pix. I had to make mine a different shape because I am using a B/C shifter with a John Willhoit short shift kit. It's in white primer now but probably will be body-color when the car is painted.

Unfortunately, life has intervened and I have not had much "garage time" lately. I did get to fab up the tabs/bracing for the Optima battery box today.

Re: Type A Outlaw Project
I reformed the side of the shift tower so that they curve and flow better. Drill countersunk holes in upper section. This weekend I fab'ed a mounting location for the Spyder hand brake.

They are the aluminum billet reservoirs for the hydraulic brakes and hydraulic clutch.

Re: Type A Outlaw Project
I had the car media blasted and the hood had some thin/stretched areas around the filler opening that had some thick body filler. I decided to re-skin the hood with a good skin from restoration design. It took a couple of days, and a lot of hammer/dolly work, but I'm happy with the results.

Re: Type A Outlaw Project
Awesome job on the car and hood. Was is the process for making the hole for the centre filler cap? Assuming a metal hole saw? Do you plan on rolling the edge down?

Yes, as it turns out, a 4 1/2" hole saw gives me about a 2mm gap for the filler cap.
The first time I owned this car, I have a full shop with air tools/plasma cutter/MIG etc. As life often happens, I downsized significantly and sold almost all of it. Fortunately, most of the hard metal work is done because now I only have basic garage tools. I don't have the tools necessary to roll down the edge of the hole. Some of the welds, if you look closely, that I have had to make recently, are pretty ugly with lots of clean up necessary, because all I have presently is a cheap core flux welder

Welded some metal around the door openings to even out the gaps.

Doing some metal shrinking to get the new hood skin to fit.

I am grateful for YouTube. I find the Eastwood videos particularly useful. I learned how to apply lead body solder from one of their videos and it came out pretty well.

Re: Type A Outlaw Project
I finally finished the 911 R style engine lid hinge install. I had to fab some recessed attachment points on the inner body lip, but this is what it looked like when done.
