PreA single mount trans conversion to duel mount

#1 Post by Erik bruun »

Hi friends.

Anyone have experience changing from a single mount transmission to a duel mount? What parts would need to be sourced?

I have a 55 that I’m looking to install a wevo 5 speed, which is will require the duel mount set up. My 55 has the single mount trans currently. Image

Looking for info or advise thanks.
Erik

Erik, there are no mounting brackets on your pre-A car for a dual mount transmission.
You'd need to have later brackets welded to the torsion tube of your car.

Hi Erick
you will have to use a B/C shifter and tube also.

If you go to Pre-A forum and look for 50070 AKA Walt from Iowa to Rennsport and back you'll see how we did a 741 into a '53 using a 644 nose cone. That doesn't fully help you but kinda gives you an idea of whats involved.

We also put a 741 in a '55 Speedster that retained the 741 nose cone and we used 911 914 shifter parts combined with the original shifter to look like the original '55 yet work with the trans to so you don't ruin the looks of the early interior with a big late model shifter.

I will try to dig up some pics of how we did that conversion.

I was going to go through the process for installing late trans in early cars but that doesn't help you since your doing a wevo. I'll just tell you how we'd do it, and take it for what its worth.

Put original trans in and make fixtures/jigs from engine mounting surface to rear of car. Something so when you get the wevo in you can duplicate where the trans needs to be front to back. Maybe something to locate the trans height also at rear mount also,I assume that the wevo uses the original trans mounts and hoop at the back. I would use a digital angle finder on the same engine mounting surface on the trans so that will tell you how far up and down the nose needs to be. It would be handy it you could make a fixture to hold the nose of trans tight so when your making the mounts that weld to the beam the trans doesn't move around.

We had a customer that wanted a 741 in his '55. He also wanted to use the 741 nose cone to eliminate the monkey motion. Most people will tell you to use the B/C shift tower, sorry that's looks terrible in a pre-A. Lee was able to modify a 911 shift rod thru the tunnel and 914 shift tower with B/C guts in it and cut down, original shifter stalk was welded on. The shift tower was also recessed a small amount in the tunnel. Somewhat of a complex deal but looks almost stock ( it sets slightly higher ) and shifts great.

Unfortunately we don't have real good pics of things all done, it was getting toward the end of the driving season and owner was getting ecited to drive it before the weather got bad.
