912 seats

#1 Post by John Clarke »

Hi all.
Did the front seats of the 912 hinge forward diagonally towards the center to allow easier access to the rear? Don't have a 912 car here, but apparently have 2off 912 seats.
Cheers Jay

I have a 66 912, and 356B. The difference is only in the j-hook seat back lock release, and the seat rails. The 912 lower slide rails stay with the seats, so you can't slide them off the front of rails. The back release is a single on the right seat, and none on the left. The fold pivot point and back adjustment is the same through 68. Both seats will fit, there are not too many differences.

John,

I am 99.99999999999999999% sure they will not fit in a 356 as the seat rails are different widths apart, with the 911/912 seats having a wider width between the rails than the 356.

I can add that other percentage portion, they are too wide for a 356, but otherwise look very similar. Also I thought they did slide off the rails like a 356.

I apologize, Sebastian is absolutely correct.

The 356 rails are ~450mm apart the 912 is ~490mm. The 912 mount rails are 1mm wider. I need to go look closer before posting.

I have a few sets of seats left from the late 60's. It seams I have mixed the bottoms and backs some time in the past. I have a B bottom with 68 911 headrest backs. It worked, I have always thought they were the same. Having never paid too much attention, the seats backs were split to box them in a move and I must have them mixed up. Black vinyl looks the same. they all have slightly different fold releases, but the same recliner pivot. I had always considered them the same. THEY ARE NOT.

I am glad this came up, since I have the 912 in an interior replacement at this time, I may have those bottoms reversed on the original 912 seats. I will go measure the "original 912 seats" at the upholstery shop tomorrow.

Sebastian, thank you for your correction, I would hate to waste a Spinney Beck woven hide on the wrong seat bottoms for the 912. Its a good catch. I just wished I have tagged all this spare stuff when I pulled it.

Hi John,

To me what is great about this forum is that the collective knowledge means we get our facts double, triple and quadruple checked so even a youngin' like me can chime in once in a while with some info. My goal in life is to enjoy these cars for 52 years or more just like you but I've still got a ways to go to catch up!

You can use 911 seats in a 356. You just have to install the seat rails differently. I can't remember the details; you either flip them around or install them left to right and vice versa.

I know it can be done because when I bought my '62 car it had early 911 sport seats installed that way.

Edit: Seat rails meaning the metal pieces which attach to the floor, not the rails (tracks) which attach to the seat.
