I choose the Sharpbuilt (Austrialian) fan shroud for that reason, I didnt want oil lines in the engine compartment. The Sharpbuilt was the only one I could find that uses the stock cooler & I 'm using a Mazda RX7 cooler in the left rear fender also. The F.I. is different components I found, no one at the time had a kit that supported sequential & crank fire. TWM throttle bodies, and Haltec Sprint 500 fuel & ignition management. We are using Toyota cam sensor picking up with a pin on the cam gear and a Mazda crank sensor behind the pulley. I built an identical engine for a friend about 4 years ago. The f.i. was a big learning curve, but we seem to have it pretty well sorted out. Its mated to a 901 5/speed.

I put a Type 4 in my 63 Split window Type II. It did not sound like a 914. That said, I did hade a Carrera single exhaust.

I used a 36HP VW housing from CB which has the provision for the external oil cooler. I extended it to accept the 914 cooler.
I used 2 sets of the cylinder tin from the 914 that faced the flywheel.
I installed an adapter from "Down the center" for the typ I VW alternator.
The carbs are Dellorto.
The flywheel is a VW 1972 412. 200mm. Only manual trans offered.
