Just beginning my '63 Outlaw build
Hi Folks - I recently finished up my 964 project, and found a slightly sad 1963 356B T6 (Vin # 124101), with a non-matching engine, languishing in a storage container. The body is a bit like Frankenstein with scars everywhere. Clearly she's been well-used over the past 57 years. To the best of my knowledge, she has not run since 1991. I am planning a full Outlaw build, and have acquired a Wevo 5-speed, a Wilhoit 2.2l engine kit, 4-wheel discs and a bunch of other parts. I expect that like my 964, every part will be new by the time I'm finished. I received the body back from acid dip today - here is a photo of the current state. I want to thank this forum for all the knowledge, opinions, and experiences that made some of my decisions a bit easier, as I am new to the 356 world.

Looks like a fun project. That acid dip sure did a great job cleaning it. Do you have to worry about any flash rusting?

Actually, the last part of the dip is a rust inhibitor that will ostensibly protect it for up to a year in a reasonable climate. (My shop in CA is climate controlled). In any event, my plan is to quickly do the metal work (the only current bad metal is the rear seat area and I have the replacement), re-blast it and get it in etch prime while I sort out the mechanicals. I'll worry about cosmetic bodywork after I know that everything fits.
In case anyone cares, here are a couple of the interior I just finished on the 964.

Big fan of orange in particular, but the 964 looks fantastic.

Adam, the acid strip looks great, where did you have that done? How did you handle the sound deadening removal? We've got a '61 we're disassembling now and the interior tar based sound deadener treatment is just plain mean. I've seen how some use dry ice and isopropyl alcohol to remove it, heat is counter productive. We're on the list for media blasting in Sacramento but I'm intrigued by what I see in your photos.

Re: Just beginning my '63 Outlaw build
Jerry and Judy,
I think carefully about acid dipping since I did that on some doors and the engine lid 30 years ago. The process used to be common in the Santa Clara area back then and it did a great job of stripping the paint and rust. The problem is that the acid penetrates the metal junctions, where two pieces are close together, drawn in by capillary action. Subsequent water washing at best, only dilutes the acid in the seams. Heat drying drives off most of the water and the seams appear dry. But then after you paint, the acid leaches out and destroys the paint near the edges, even years later. I think after 30 years the process has stopped, but I have never used that method again.

Ugh - the sound deadening was just a miserable week with a heat gun and scrapers. Naptha helped but there were no shortcuts. I had to truck the body shell up to Oregon to have it dipped - no longer legal in California.

Where did you take it? What is the cost?

Progress. The sheet metal is finally coming together! I will have replaced about 60% of the metal on the car. The engine is a Wilhoit 2.2 L kit which will be mated to a WEVO 5-speed. I expect the sheet metal to be complete by April/May, re-test all the mechanicals and have it in paint by mid summer.
