Steering wheel pointers

#1 Post by TJ Grewal »

Hi - Looking for pointers to anyone who modifies or makes custom steering wheels. I would love to take my stock 356B wheel, reduce the diameter and have a thicker rim all around. So to those who quickly glance at the interior nothing looks different... thanks in advance. tj

John Wilhoit did this with a steering wheel on a black cab that was at Irvine cars and coffee last January.

Hear is a link to one that might be close to what you are thinking

It's not an easy job if done correctly. The steel rim is not in the center of the foam applied over it. Add to that the difficulty of finding a rim with the spokes in the same place as the 356 spokes and the problems come to light. I had to cast new rubber onto sections of the rim to fill in the blanks so to speak. The end result was, I think, very nice but it was not so easy to do.
