Trans mission mainshaft QUIZ

#1 Post by Jacques Lefriant »

We have been exploring the possibility of converting swing axles to 5 spd
Everyone but Jon what do these fit? hint the top one is a 901 five speed mainshaft with replaceable 2nd gear usually refered to as the 904 mainshaft

2,3, and 4 down from the top are standard shafts machined by crazy racers to fit a second gear in place of first. Bottom is a stock shaft, pre-50000 serial number on trans, with non-factory necked down area for diff carrier clearance.

Vic, shafts 2 and 3 are splined, and 2 has no keyway at all.

Vic is correct on #4 but you do not need to be crazy. #2 is the inspiration for #4 and is factory but even Jon has not used a #3

Didn't see the splines; poor photo/poor eyes.
Couldn't note the lack of a keyway on #4.
Jon, did you mean #4 had no keyway?
Jacques, Jon, we need to be sure of our numbering.
I don't see why 2 "early" inspired 4 "late" (no keyway; how do you use it?).
I'm assigning "early" to the ones with the long section with snap ring grooves after the rear bearing location, and "late" to the ones with the short section behind the bearing location.

While all you trans gurus are mulling over the main shafts, question, how much of the late split case 519 trans is VW and what parts are not VW? Thank you.

The case, the diff, and the axles. NOTHING else internally.
Oh yeah; the nuts and bolts.
You're welcome.

Ok Jon
you can tell us all about the shafts. We must have caught Mike Robins napping.

Vic, #4 has keyways, they're just not visible in Jacques' photo.
Shaft #3 has a keyway for reverse; #2 has no keyway.

Hi Vic
#2 is a 718 mainshaft. where the 356 1st would be they have 2nd gear in its place. they moved 1st to the other side of the intermediate plate for the 718. the shift pattern is weird since 1st is now where reverse was. on the 901 they put 2-4 backwadrs from the 718. #3 is intended to use 718 splined gears in a regular 4 spd i thought it would be more elegant.
cheers
