Hi Tom
Consider the 8/31 Cadrobbi Conversion it may be cost efective. And you will be ready for my 4 Cam Joko engine.

i'd favour a VW based conversion, anything Porsche is a licence to print money over here....as long as the engine and gearchange keep their original positions, and any chassis mods wouldn't prevent any subsequent owner from easily reverting (without further mods), then i wouldn't care what the gearbox looked like

Hi out there,
just finished a 55 Coupe with a 914 5 Speed and 911 SWB Rear, was a big challenge over the Year's, the only missing parts are now to shorten the rear Shocks so they match to the 911 "Bananas" and the upper 356 Attachments on the Chassis

Best, Ruedi Brack www.356.ch see "Project 210"

Great looking car, Ruedi! What brake calipers are on the car?

Jacques, Aren't the 356 gears extra wide due to the design of the Porsche synchromesh? How about a more compact synchro or a dog type engagement to make room for 5th?

Here is a nice compact 6 speed sequential gearbox that is good to 800hp.

CJ, I think that one would be a little noisy on the street :D. If anybody was serious about 5th gear in a 741, I would start with a Berg 5 and back engineer it. But you can't use mine :D

Jacques...why not produce an intermediate plate from steel that is scalloped out so that a 5th gear can be made hollow below the teeth and wrap around the bearings that are supported by bosses that are formed into the scalloped out intermediate plate. The steel plate could also support more compact hardware for holding the bearing retaining plate. Additional room to fit the 5th gear could be gained by surface grinding some of the lower gears.

And with all those skinny little gears, you better add a couple more magnetic drain plugs to catch the bits.
With our measly 165 HP vintage racing engines, we continually break the remaining thin gear.
For the torquey street-car guys, I see further problems using thinned down gears.

I don't think you would need to narrow the gears that much and the street guys don't bang gears at 8000rpm.

Ain't the banging, it's the torque.

The guys that need 5 gears most are the guys with close to stock engines. My 2133cc has a 10% higher ring and pinion and stock 1-4 ratios. The car has much more torque than a 2.0 911S so it can pull a tall 1st and I get a relaxed highway rpm with only 4 gears. The 4G leaves a big gap down to 3rd so that can't be ideal. Our case is pretty large and could hold 5 or 6 gears if somebody put their mind to it but with the expense of making gears it's not a Hillbilly engineering project. Somebody like Quaife, Hewland or Webster could make short work of it but could they get their money out of the project? The way that 356 owners throw money at their cars it might be worth it, especially if they have existing parts that they can adapt.

Hi David,
the Calipers I use are 964 Alu front and rear, but needs modification on the Spindle and a Intermediate plate on the rear, they are design to use vented discs also. Have also a device on the dash to change the brake balance front to rear I use together with two modified, i.e. reduced in Diameter, original brakecylinders.

Do you notice a significant improvement in handling by upgrading to a 911 rear suspension?
