and, steering coupler question.

#1 Post by Anthony Hall Berry »

All,
My '65 SC Coupe's steering coupler is readily visible from above, when the access cover is removed, and form below, when the car is up on a lift. Is it supposed to be inside of a lubricated box? Mine certainly is not. Advice please.
Thanks,
Tony

Max; that is NOT a C coupler!
And no, it would not be in a box, Tony

Max's coupler is an A coupler which is the same as a $7 VW coupler. The C coupler is about three times as thick and 6 times more expensive. However with 4 spacers, and 4 bolts the VW coupler can be substituted for the C and you'll never notice a difference. I don't.

Here's the C style, albeit, quite old and worn.

Hi Harlan
For obvious liability reasons i would not go there. You never heard it from me but the 911 coupler if properly installed would be a good substitute fot the C one.

There's a half page article in the Porsche 356 magazine Vol 21 #4 (Winter 2005) with pictures telling how to do it. Works Great. I think Zims offers a kit to use the VW coupler too.

BTW back in the good old days, that is when these cars were new, there were lists of VW parts which fit Porsches.
