4.5 Fuchs

#1 Post by Omar Almada »

Instaled some original 4.5 original fuchs on the 53 cab for a change. I read somewhere that you have to modify the wheels valve hole if you are using tubeless tires , or you tires will get off the wheel while drving . anybody ?

While the valve stem hole should be modified for absolute safety, I have run the early deep-dish 6" Fuchs without modifying the stem hole. Your decision.

Hi Omar,
The 4.5 Fuchs, and other tube type wheels, lack the raised bump/ring that securely hold the tire when it becomes deflated. As soon as a tire loses air on a rim without the bead retention feature it is free to wobble from side to side and possibly fly off of the rim. Tube rims are more likely to cause a car control problem during a flat. If the tubeless valve stems are a good fit in the rim and they are not leaking, easy to check, then I would not expect a problem. Some tube type alloys have the valve stem hole drilled with an uneven surface inside where the rubber tubeless valve stem seats. If you install the tubeless tires and the stem is not leaking then I would not expect a problem. There is no modification to a tube rim that will make a tire stay put during a blowout.

Fuchs always look good!

Do you have any pictures directly from the side? I'm thinking of some 4.5's for my '52.

nice fuchs - those could be from a '67 911S - or repro's (hope not!) - i also run deep six's, but on my early 911 - i also have the valve stem issue - my local discount tire uses SUV/Light truck valve stems, which fit great in the deep six's - hope this helps - brad in sea

Tubeless tires arrive in the United States in the early 1950's. Think of how much easier it was for the manufacturers to mount tires for the thousands of cars that came down the assembly line daily. These cars did not have the safety bump. 356C tires mounted and steel rims did not have the safety bump. I think that started in use in the early to middle 70's. Then it was only on the outside. Later both sides of the wheel received them. You have to let the tire become nearly flat for these bumps to world.
We have been modifying Pre 1971 wheels for years. Spray some Windex around the valve stem usually when they are older they will leak. Look at a valve stem in the parts store. You will find it snaps into the wheel to keep if from being pushed into the wheel by and accident. Your wheels will not allow that. During our racing years we screwed pipe threads into the rim to hold the valve stem since we lost a race due to one coming loose. I believe we charge 30 to 40 dollars per wheel (2013) to do a wheel. The more wheels the cheaper the price. There is postage both ways. Usually this can be done in one day. al

Found some old Dunlop Racing and blue Streak tires, they are in great shape for a 40+ tires but not recomended for highway or high speed. I personaly like the look.
