Back on the road 356 Turbo

#1 Post by Mike DeJonge »

after 6 years of trial and error and the engine being in and out numerous times, it is finally running real good 1980cc doing an honest 195 hp on the engine dyno. fuel injected, Big Stuff management system for fuel pressure, boost pressure, oil pressure, meth injection, timing and individual cylinder spark control. Has a crank trigger system, new custom grind cam, new scatt crank, and titanium sodium filled valves. Turbo has ceramic bearings for quick spool up. goes like stink

Mike- Do you mean titanium intakes and sodium filled stainless exhausts? If you do have sodium filled ti valves, who makes them?

Hi CJ
Exceldine i beleive has that capability. Talked to them about doing them for a 4-Cam. Capricorn is way behind me in upgraded parts for the 4-Cam. They only DLC the rockers from what i can tell.

for the sodium filled, and titanium valves check with the VW guys who are drag racing their buggies. I looked thru my paper work but can't find the guys name. He is out of Tennessee and builds sand drag motors. I will have a look again when I get back from Hershey. We used chevy guides for the valves, they are not as tall, so would not disturb airflow as much as stock guides

I have seen titanium valves. I have seen sodium filled stainless. I have not seen sodium filled titanium.

Where have you been? CV Products/Xceldyne has been Sodium filling Ti exhaust valves for at least 10 years. Now since you seem to have all the answers why did Porsche use sodium filled intake valves on the 4-Cam engines? What CV does they bore the stem and go to say 4mm of the head and do about a 60% fill and close. the 4-Cam is filled from the face/head and the whole head is hollowed out and the stem is bored to lighten the valve. but is that the only reason?

and interesting story i tried to buy Sodium from Dow chemical but i had to supply a permit from Homeland Security letting me buy a usable amount. i may have to harvest all the old valves i have in a glove box for my project.

I do not know but I will guess...They didn't know any better?

My understanding is that hollow valves, filled or not, are a risk because the inside surface can't really be inspected for flaws that may lead to a failure. They are light though.

Don't know crap about high performance valves. I do know a 356 with just short of 200 ponies is awesome! Nice job Mike!!!!!
Don't hate me for driving Volkswagens.
