My Rennsport Road Trip

#1 Post by Chris Hansen »

I've been a Pelican for years and posted there. Thought some
of you guys might get some inspiration. I picked Les Paul as
a handle many years ago when my son had just gotten his first
Les Paul.

Incrediable. You pictures were great as was the story. The trip as a whole had to be near the top of your bucket list!

I told my wife several years ago that I would like to make a trip like that in my 356. I am really looking forward to it. Really enjoyable to follow your thread on Pelican.

The second day was my, what am I doing here doubting Thomas
day. A 49 year old car at sustained stints of 4,500 rpm's. I did have 3,000
to go from there though. And wondering about those skinny little 165's. looking back
I would not change a thing. Except get my headlights aimed correctly. Now my wife, my brother,
my son, and several friends want to go to the next Rennsport with me
in the 356. I promised my wife no more than 500 miles a day.

Chris, I just read your Pelican topic, fantastic trip, thanks for posting! Loved the shots of the "bug buildup" -)

Sounds like your 356 has no heater boxes?

And 4100rpm in 4th is an indicated 80mph with a tall 4th gear, did I read that right? Usually 356 speedos are optimistic in that speed range, but yours sounds pessimistic.

In my coupe with stock gearing at 4100 in 4th I'm going over 85, confirmed with gps.

Wow what a fantastic trip. In 08' I drove the same roads when I picked up my RUF turbo R: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/9 ... -many.html

Just got my first 356 and I'm leaning towards taking the bumpers off after those pictures! ;-)

Thank you for sharing!

The single best thing I've done to that car was Vic Skirmants
tallest 4th gear. There are several pics on the ET highway showing
speed and rpm's. 4500 or 4600 shows 95 on the car speedo
but was 93 on the gps. Pretty close.

Chris, thanks for your great trip account and photos. It is an inspiration to finish my 64 coupe restoration after 40 years in storage and do a trip around the entire Western states. I've wondered if Vic's tall 4th gears wouldn't be a smart thing to do for highway cruising. But alas, I just installed my transaxle so that will have to wait for awhile. Please post some more photos on this site when you get a chance.

See if you can figure out what the car is in the arch. This stretch of road was amazing. I have a bunch of it on a new video camera I was using with hd sound.

There were many spots where these guys would just flat out pull away from me like I was standing still. Luckily I could catch up on the downhills and curvy bits. they

Somewhere in the middle of Nevada this silver Turbo shows up at a gas station. It was one of the featured cars in this lineup ahead of me at Rennsport, as well as another one who had tire troubles. This was a section of huge sweeepers. Captain Insano who was leading the way either had some 6th sense or there were no cops out that day. Not really captain Insano but rather Bob Aines with the 69. There had been many times that day I wished I had my Turbo but to prove a 63 could keep up for 780 miles was pretty encouraging.

the next 2 pics were taken on the ET highway. You can see what my tach with the vic S tall 4th is turning at an indicated 94. Then the next pic is the gps and its mph. Pretty darn close. The guys up ahead later vanished. Some say the 997 and Turbo had their cruises set at 140 for long stretches. May just have been rumors.
