Carrera Louvers

#1 Post by Steve Gaddy »

I am searching for someone who can make Carrera style louvers for a custom application - as on a flat piece of metal with custom width and spacing. I thought the Outlaw corner might be a good place to look for help.
Thanks, Steve

Steve, Dave Miller in China Grove (near Charlotte) can do those also.

Steve,
I can supply a source that can punch louvers, 3 & 4 inches any spacing. He just did a series of 3 inch for my heater boxes.

Gary, that's a very stylish modification. Is there a functional purpose?

Barry,
It's my alternative to using double flapper boxes on a modified '59 B/B engine. This and several other modifications I've made should be able to remove the additional heat load I expect, keeping a 'somewhat' stock appearance, while adding a slight irreverent look!

PS: I should have added in my initial post that the louvers weren't punched in my flapper boxes; they were punched in a 16 gage plate, and I cut openings in the flapper boxes and tig welded them in place.

So what happens when you close the flappers and you do want heat ? It would seem the lovers would lose a lot of the precious hot air ? But I guess you Southern California guys don’t ever need serious amounts of heat as for ambient temps less than 20°F ! :P

Larry,
You're right, it never gets really cold, and I haven't used the heater in years, mostly a jacket is enough. The louvers add about 20% to the area when the flaps are open, so there shouldn't be a huge loss of heat to the cabin when the flaps are closed. There's a drop-in plate that covers the louvers, but I don't expect to use it.

Dave Miller is my choice too. Great guy, great work. He is currently doing louvers on an aluminum 911 deck lid. Wanted something a little different for my ST, R, RSR project.
I know, I'm an idiot! Gotta have some fun with this stuff or what's the point.
