911 into 356

#1 Post by Mark Curbishley »

Is it possible to install the very early 20.litre 911 engines into a 356A and onto the stock rebuilt gearbox, any advice would be appreciated.
I am building and Outlaw car but i am keen to keep a Porsche power plant and stock gearbox and rear suspension.
I have seen pictures of later 911 engines installed but onto different gearboxes and changing all the rear suspension.
Any advice would be very much appreciated, thank you

Hi Mark
the short answer is don't do it.
If you must. find an early 901 flywheel with the 109 tooth count and use the ring spacer from a Carrera2. Take out a good inurance policy and be ready to change your gearbox like your underwear. It is possible to use a more robust version of you gearbox but even spending a lot of time reinforcing it you would be better off with a 911 box. Andy Prill at Maxwell and Page may give you some of his hard earned advice from your side of the pond. Mike Smith may be able to get you committed to a mental instution. And you Brits think that we are the crazy ones.

Mark, there are many 356 "outlaws" out there with stock appearance 356 engines. If you just have to get a different "look", you could add a full flow oil filter and some aftermarket air cleaners. Have you seen these? http://www.mainelycustombydesign.com/en ... #airfilter
Only for Solexes and Webers however, not Zeniths.

There have been previous topics on 356Talk about the extreme difficulty of installing a 911 6-cylinder engine in a 356. And it will make the car very "tail heavy" and dramatically change the handling (and not for the better). The 356 suspension was not designed to have that kind of weight hanging off the rear end of the car.

Good luck,

Hi Mark
I think the 911 Altenator/fan is a good idea but i haven't seen any nice ones for the 616 engine. even the Type IV ones don't come over as good as Ibraham's Carrera one does. and you can get you must know the 911 engine for less money. The Type IV engine does not have much of a weight problem and Jake Raby has perfected the kit to install one. I would like to see a Flat fan conversion but not like the Covair belt. something like the Porsche Elva and the 935. If you must keep the swing axle box consider a later 741 and you might need my Cadrobbi conversion for the diff.
"Rebuilt" stock 519/644/716 are weak even when a knowlegeable person does them. Hey if you have a bunch of Euros laying around Eleven parts just put a rebuilt 587 engine on the market.

Hi Jacques

Again great information, i am afraid i am stuck with the 644 gearbox as Mike Smith just went through it at considerable expense.

Jake Raby did have a 911 style cooling kit but it disappeared almost overnight, i am not sure why, i asked but there was nothing left or available, and i have not seen anybody offer one since
I think it will have to be a C, SC or 912 engine and make it look as good as i can!

Ibraham's Carrera set-up is very cool, anyone know what he is charging these days?

curbo; do it! :) Then flip it on it's ear and get yourself a right proper early 23 and quit messing around with these dinky cars.

Stop worrying about how it looks and start worrying about how to make it faster?

Install a T4?

Install a stroked T1?

Both of these can run 911 shrouds.

Raby stopped using 911 shrouds because they don't cool as evenly as the DTM shrouds that he sells. Apparently the temperature spread between cylinders was too great.

Thanks Mike
Yeah i think Type 1 looks the best bet as i am in touch with the best Type 1 builder in the UK

I figured there had to be a problem with the Bergman 911 setup as it seemed to disappear almost overnight, looked cool though
