 Post subject: Need muffler opinions

Here is a muffler I found that might work. I have an Bursht extractor sytem and was looking for a cheap replacement for the muffler. Any opinions?

If it bolts up, make sure it clears the body. Looks affordable to me.

I have one like that on my Ghia. Periodically I will by a new one--they can be kinda loud because the glass blows out after awhile. But they last a long time. I had to reject my car afterwards to run a bit more on the rich side.

The question is whether or not the flange bolt circle/pattern is the same as on a Bursch.

And frankly, the transition from header outlet size and muffler pipe dia. kinda sucks.

Its a shame that there are so few good muffler solutions for a Bursch header. I've struggled with this issue many times over the last 25 years.

If you go for it, let us know how the matchup works out.

There are about as many combinations of flanges and, more importantly, the angle of the pipes as there are manufacturers of "extractor" exhausts. The chances of that random muffler fitting your exhaust are slim to none. "Back in the day" every budding Porsche enthusiast manufactured an "extractor" exhaust in his garage and was in the business. No two of them will interchange parts. There are more combinations than can be counted. Forget trying to buy a suitable replacement. Go to a local muffler shop and have them fab up a muffler and exhaust pipe. Don't waste your money on some ramdom piece of junk on EBAY.

Few of these exhausts make any meaningful horsepower. The Tangerine Racing exhaust was Air Cooled Technologies choice for a long time. I understand Jake is making his own but I've not seen it.

Straight pipes don't work unless you are going to be running it wide open and keeping your rpm in the upper reaches of the engine. Just like drag pipes on a V-Twin; they aren't much for torque but they do work at the limit and why they are called "drag pipes".

NLA has a nice aftermarket exhaust called the Super Sound.

M&K makes a dual pipe or single for the 912 based on Abarth internals and like everything else they make is quite light. They sound nice too. Good people to work with too.

Greg,,, inexpensive for Bursch try a straight pipe and insert a Chirco baffle.

I think I'm going to stick with my current setup. The muffler works for now except, there is a leak around one of the edges. I can throw on some gray high temp paint but, any ideas as to how to seal up the leak? Can I use JB weld or will that just fall off with all of the heat?

I'd try to spot weld it with a Mig (if the metal is up to the task). Here is another option I was aware of but have never tried. Let us all know how it works out. 600 degrees should be plenty.

I picked up a 68 912 motor for my 62 Hardtop while the super is being rebuilt. It came with a extractor exhaust but no muffler. Picked up a flange and some 2-1/2" pipe and started welding. The pipe goes through the cans and is drilled with steel wool stuffed in the space between. The two outlets fit in the body where the normal outlets would.

Anyone facing this issue with a Bursch should consider a possible exhaust system change. The fact is that the stock muffler makes better quality power. Even if you are on a budget you can watch the classifieds until a nice used one comes up for sale. If you don't find that sporty enough then one of the aftermarket mufflers that are similar to stock are good. I had a K&W that was very nice and some others have been mentioned.
