wather seal for outlaw gas tank/cap

I recently traded a strong running BJ7 for a B outlaw coupe. I have failed in my attempt to post a picture. The gas tank filler neck was extended thru the hood but a solution for sealing is up to me. Appreciate any solutions.The B has been inoperative for several years so brakes first. The recent thread on wheel cylinder restoration is helpful as is this site, which is unmatched as compared to the MG and Triumph sites I have visited. Many thanks for any ideas.

Nice car Wray!

People use a tray around the neck to catch water. The upper parts of the tray meets with the hood - you could use body trim (at any auto parts store for doors usually) as a "seal" there. I would maybe try to split a vacuum or a fuel hose and place it over the rim of the tray. The tray also has a little funnel with a hose to guide the water out.

I am assuming that most people who don't do this conversion by themselves here in Southern California go to him to have it done. He will also just sell you the parts you need (I assume you don't have the tray) if you decide to not do it on your own (nice guy by the way when you call him).

Wray, if I understand your plan, the seals would create a narrow ring around the filler neck that would hold water. If you then opened the cap, you might get water into the gas tank. From the picture of your hood/gas cap, the cap doesn't stick up much above the hood. I'm trying to guess how high the filler neck extends relative to the top of the hood just in front of the hole (which I presume would be the low spot in the top of the ring of water). Does this make sense?

Bob, thanks for the compliment on the car. You bring up a good point I had not considered and need to ponder, the filler neck only extends about 1/2 inch above the hood. i have fond memories of Kansas City, spent 12 great years there and met my wife. By the way, your car looks like it is having fun in the avatar.

Hey Wray,
How about a little fin on your fuel cap? The whole purpose for the filler-through-the-hood is a quick fill right! Seems like yours would be a little awkward to grab.

Te steel is thick enough for MIG weld - no warping issues on the cap at all. And believe me, I put a lot of heat, because I wanted to make sure there was enough penetration before I cut the beads off and give it a nice transitional corner.

One very cheap solution is a small dog dish, the stainless steel ones with the rubber trim on the bottom. You flip it upside down, and cut out the center.
