Home in the garage again after a long time - now its time to start the reassembly and put some of the stuff I've been buying from NLA, Stoddard and Al Zim on the car.

I've been working on the Carrera installing new brakes, tie rods, Koni steering
damper, dual master cylinder, and trunk insulation. I've cleaned up and reinstalled
the Koni shocks, the headlights and horns and rewired the lights. I've also
applied a fresh coat of Candy Apple Red to the tail light lenses. The drums are
off getting polished and will be done next week. I'll be installing the Stoddard
insulation kit in the interior and engine compartment next, then the headliner
and new windshield will go in followed by the rest of the glass.

Also to add to this story of the Porsche. I could have sworn that I read some where or heard from Gene Winfield when I was working for him. A gentleman bought that car from Dean, and turned out to be a big time bank robber and was arrested by the feds. Maybe it was he was building it and thats how he aquired the car. If you know anymore on this story please let me know.

Dean had put the car up for sale in the September 1960 issue of Road & Track
magazine - here's a copy of the ad:

Image

Apparently it didn't sell so so he repainted the car gold sometime in 1961 - it
appeared in this color in an article in Customs Illustrated in May 1963:

Image

Dean had the Carrera parked outside his shop with For Sale signs on it and
he was approached by a guy who wanted to buy the car for cash:

Image

Image

His name was Albert Nussbaum and he was a bank robber wanted by the FBI
for his activities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He and his partner Bobby
"One Eye" Wilcoxson were on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Nussbaum and
Wilcoxson flew to California and they each bought a custom car - Nussbaum
bought the Porsche and Wilcoxson bought the Barris built 1955 Chevrolet Aztec
(painted by Jeffries)

Image

Nussbaum took the Porsche to south Florida where it was seen in his sisters
driveway near Ft Lauderdale. The FBI showed up a Jeffries shop a few weeks
after he sold it and asked him a bunch of questions about the new owner of
the Porsche.

Nussbaum was eventually caught and served his time in prison. He corresponded
with Dan Marlowe author of "The Name Of the Game is Death" and struck up a
friendship. Here's an excerpt from Inside Detective magazine from February 1963:

Before being arrested Nussbaum had begun corresponding with mystery author
Dan Marlowe, who encouraged him to put his experiences into fiction. He suddenly
had plenty of time on his hands, so he wrote some short stories, and of course,
he had an aptitude for that, too. With Marlowe’s help, he scored a gig writing film
reviews for the Montreal magazine Take One, and after being paroled years later,
wrote fiction that appeared in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchock’s
Mystery Magazine, and other places. He and Marlowe eventually lived together,
with Nussbaum acting as a sort of caretaker for his mentor, who was in failing
health and suffering from amnesia. Marlowe died in 1987 and Nussbaum continued
to write, as well as host workshops, and get himself elected president of the
Southern California chapter of the Mystery Writer’s Association.
Albert Nussbaum died in 1996, aged 62.

We're trying to reunite the Aztec and the Carrera at next year's Amelia Island Concours.

If your into bubble tops and how to do them. Check out the latest edition of Rod and custom with the article on Darryl Starbird. Cool stuff.
Also, I think I read somewhere that on the Mantaray, it was quoted as, "I only had to build one" meaning he either did it once with no flaws or he only built one??? Dean Jeffries had major, talent beyond most people's capabilities. Cool stuff.
Also check out thunderflite.com this was a bubble top TBird built by Dino. I got to do some paint work on this car and help Dino out. I had nothing to do with bubble tops but wish I would have been around for that.
If anyone out there wants to play around with some bubble top projects or try to, and are close to SoCal area. Let me know I will give you some free labor.

Got the right side drums installed after getting them back from the polisher and started gluing in the sound deadening inside the passenger compartment this weekend.

Worked on installing more of the sound deadening kit and the insulation above the headliner this weekend. I ran out of 3M trim adhesive but it was getting dark anyway. I have all of the interior kit installed except the tunnel and main floor pan pieces.

I'm going to try to get the headliner in next week (if it EVER warms up around here) which means the glass can go back in immediately afterward. Suspension is done except for bleeding the brakes and getting the wheels rechromed. All the sound deadening material is in and I need to start work on the dash, interior and engine compartment panels.

I rolled the car outside for some pictures to catch the evening light so here's how its looking...

Does anyone else see the similarity of the front end of this car to a Mercedes 300SLR and the back end to a Gullwing?

Headliner, fuel pumps, and front and rear glass are in. The windshield fought us every step of the way and required four tries before we could get it in the car (rear glass went in on the third try). Its been too long since I did that job - I had forgotten all of the tricks but we were careful and I sure didn't want to break the new Sigla windshield.

Now for the bad news... I borrowed a friends bore scope to check out the motor and found this:

A nice little hole in the crown of the number four piston....Guess the engine has to come apart anyway...

Fantastic updates and posts--I'm a newbie to forums and email, and I just joined the registry after a 22 year break. I saw Dean's carrera at the Oakland Roadster Show or maybe Sacramento's Autorama and I couldn't wait to roll my front and rear and fill in the bumper holes on my 58 coupe. Can u believe that my wife backed into a fireplug just after that so I had a perfect excuse to go outlaw right away. The body man who rolled it under used rebar and said it one of the most difficult jobs he had done. It was so smoooth and sweeet---signal red, with a set of rudge chrome knock-offs that I picked up from Carl Block's dealership while ordering a bbab l/s transaxle for our race car. Ahhh, the good old days, and many, many stories----BTW do I remember Dean's interior being completely done up in long fuzzy something? The first thing I looked at when I joined was the outlaw section, and was I excited. What a breath of fresh air! Real people, and probably no gold chains, or was that the new 911 bunch? Looks like I'm dating myself----Really happy to see how far the registry has come and what a great job they are doing with the website. I believe I was a charter member when it started as I also joined PCA sometime around 1958----got my 58 coupe used in late 58---my car payments were more than my house rent==approx $138.00 vs $8f5.00 for the house--people thought I was crazy! Little did I know then that they were right, but that is really a long story, and I can't believe how long winded I am for somebody who has never done this before. Thanks to you all for your patience and all the excitement to come after being "out in the cold." Bob
