I was recently at Cars and Coffee and I stated to a friend I was going to replace my windshield with a correct one with the proper Logo's. A very respected 356 expert advised me that I should paint the small part of the dash between the leather and the windshield black ,as it was when it came from the factory. However ,another friend also very knowledgeable with the 356's said he thought that that really only applied to the A's. I went to another C and they also had the small part painted the same colour as the exterior.
Just wondering if anyone could help me out with this. I have enclosed a picture to show what I am referring to .
Thanks for the help.
Beware of anybody that claims to be an expert and a know it all.

I have never experienced glare on windshield from that area on any of the 4 356s I have owned-none with black paint there. But I have never had an all original documented car. Also I have never seen a thread where anyone complained of glare. Anyone here ever had the problem?

It's not a glare issue but an aesthetic issue. That strip of dash disappears when brush painted black but sticks out like a sore thumb when left painted body color.

Two coupes, two different results -
64C - 128312 Reutter - body color (signal red)
65C - 130914 - black (car is ruby)
Never had a reflection issue, in fact never noticed the difference until now...

Was the 64C ever painted?
Yes - done by Pino (well known in California). Pino was a stickler for doing it as it was done at the factory so my view is that he would not have made changes. I have photos of the car being painted but don't recall one of the dash. I will try to pull them out, but they are buried. If I find something helpful I will post.

The gap between the dash and cowl on my '64 356 SC Reutter coupe VIN 129672 was originally painted body color when we began the restoration. No prior restoration or repaint.

My heron grey T5 coupe had that area of the upper dash under and ahead of the padding brush painted flat red. The car has a red interior. It looks far better finished in this manner than if the red dash pad ended at a body colored section behind the windscreen. I did hear it was to cut down on glare, but aesthetically it is certainly an improvement, in my opinion. Foolishly, I did not take a picture of the area before it was repainted. I would have loved to be able to keep the original brush painted area but there was some corrosion that needed to be addressed and so it had to be redone.
