C interior dash paint question.

#1 Post by Lockie McKinnon »

I was recently at Cars and Coffee and I stated to a friend I was going to replace my windshield with a correct one with the proper Logo's. A very respected 356 expert advised me that I should paint the small part of the dash between the leather and the windshield black ,as it was when it came from the factory. However ,another friend also very knowledgeable with the 356's said he thought that that really only applied to the A's. I went to another C and they also had the small part painted the same colour as the exterior.
Just wondering if anyone could help me out with this. I have enclosed a picture to show what I am referring to .
Thanks for the help.

Thank you , thats exactly what he said. He stated they used to just paint that area flat black with a brush .
Appreciate the confirmations.

Mine looks as though it was body colour from new? 128525 is the chassis number.

Not sure of the details but at least a Cab gets inner w-s frame/dash top painted approximately upholstery color, in my case black anyway. Coupe may only be black there, not sure.

Interestingly, the dash top on my 61 T5B had the forward area brush painted in a flat version of the interior color. Thus, while the exterior paint is Heron Grey, as is the dash top, a section of flat red was brush painted just inside the windshield and forward of the dash pad. It was explained to me that this was intended to cut down glare and reflection onto the windshield. I duplicated this when the car was repainted, but I sadly did not retain a picture of the original application. I know mine is a B and not a C, but I thought this would be a useful bit of information.

Hmmm...looks very familiar.....FWIW, that's a T6B, and not a flat black, but not glossy either...

Before jumping to conclusions, you should find out the coach builder of each car. My Karmann built 65 356C is painted body color (ruby red).

So only cabs get upholstery color automatically? Or do the black painted dash coupes all have black interiors?

So you believe that the Karmann C's do not have the black. Was yours untouched.
Mine is a Karmann also.

I am just stating that my car has the dash painted body color and it is absolutely original.
