Sump Plate Cap Nuts

#1 Post by Jim Wayman »

Anyone know if cap nuts were ever used by the factory on the 356 sump plates, instead of regular hex nuts? The parts books specify hex nuts, but many I have spoken to say that cap nuts were used for at least some period.

Thanks, Vic.

I just looked at the website for the Roads Scholars 55 Continental coupe and it looks like they used them.

You'll have to ask them if that is original for that year.

Porsche never used them.
VW introduced them in 1966 I believe.

All 356 and 912 engines use the same sump plate hardware; Flat and spring washers, and 6 x 10mm hex nuts. NOT the closed-end cap nuts!
