Twin Grill 1960 Coupe?

#1 Post by Eric Lenius »

Interesting picture circa 1967 of a 1960 356B Super Sunroof coupe with a twin grill. Could have been changed. Maybe not? Academic now since who knows where the car went....VIN110165

It has had its share of below average bodywork, so probably they updated the grilles too.

Twin grille lid was available as an option back then.

That option seems to relate to louvers, as per GT's, in steel or aluminum, not twin grilles. However the 356A '59 Carrera DeLuxe was fitted with a twin grille decklid as standard equipment, as Dr.Brett Johnson notes (with photo) in even the First Edition of his seminal book. So they certainly were around, and were considered the trick set-up at the time...
Speaking of Dr. Johnson, I infer from his recent posting activity that he's writing an updated, and apparently FAR more nuanced new edition of his key guide to Authenticity of all things 356. I will note that so far he has failed to address the even more arcane subject of original tire AIR, a matter troubling many attendees at the most recent Lit Meet last weekend...There was, however, no shortage of bloviating...
Best of Luck with the latest edition, sir.

That page I show is from the April 1960 Super 90 owner`s manual supplement. I think it is referring to the steel twin grille lids from the 356A Carrera GS cars.

Never paid attention but the America and the Conradt book picture(pushrod A car) are both twin grill long before 1962.

If anyone out there has seen a factory original steel louvered decklid, I`d be interested to know that. Brett, anything to add?

Well, as Adam said was possible, review of the factory records reveals that this coupe was equipped at the factory with twin grills as an accessory. Cool Coupe!
