Porsche vs. Reutter door hinge plate April/May 1964

#1 Post by Brett Johnson »

The Porsche purchase of Reutter was completed on May 6, 1964 according to Frank Jung' s "Porsche 356 Made by Reutter" book. I have the following information about the badges inside the driver's side door from older submissions:

Reutter: 129511 4/13/64 159273 9/17/63

Porsche: 129222 4/8/64, 129979 5/15/64 160595 5/6/64

Can anyone provide additional data points around these?

Are those build dates you show? 129979 is my car but I don't know the build date unless you just told it to me.

Brett,
The first Porsche plate you list, 129222, has a date of 4-8-64. Is that correct? The date is before the purchase of Reutter.

Yes, that is what somebody sent me, over 20 years ago. That is why I asked!

What are even the possibilities for explaining this, if the data are correct?

Incorrect information given by car owner; incorrect information on kardex; faulty translation of kardex -- that type of stuff

Also, possibility that they were installed earlier than the May 6 date -- more data points around this time would certainly help determine.

Brett, in your original post you show 129979 (my coupe) with a build date of 5/15/64.

I have the original invoice from the first owner, who picked the car up at the factory, and the invoice is dated 5/15/64. Although I guess it's technically possible that he bought the car on the same day it was completed since he did pick it up at the factory, I think that would be highly unlikely. I've always assumed my car was built some time prior to its purchase date of 5/15.

Of course if you have info that confirms the build and purchase dates are the same I'd be very interested.

The date on the kardex is technically the invoice date. Since no other records are readily available, it is the date people use as the build date -- because it is close to the actual completion date.
